Herself used to hand solder TQFP 256 pin devices (0.4mm pin spacing) for prototype builds. She said it wasn't too bad, provided you used a wave soldering tip and avoided the wine the previous night!

But I was referring not only to the pin distances, but also for layers we have in such boards in the picture...

Don't you need to hold the solder in one hand while heating up the board with the other hand holding the soldering iron?
