What a bunch of rubbish!
If the grading is done between 0 and 10 any possible grade should be given if circumstance requires. That means you can get a 0 if you really, really suck or 10 if you did really, really well. I hate it when there is a no zero policy or when teachers say "I never give a 10".
In fact, I gave up on my photography lessons for two reasons, one of them because the grades where always "sufficient" or "above sufficient" for all the students. (from the 5 or 6 possible categories)
Categories A, B, C, C+ or whatever are equally worthless.
I'm ranting this, because more and more I hear complaints about kids lacking basic knowledge in certain cases or that things should be done differently and more "modern". (Otherwise they might not be "receptive" to the subject at hand?)

You know, I had a teacher who used to say:
There is no 10, God gets a 9, I get an 8, and you get 7 and below
What an Arschloch! If the student was able to answer anything you asked, or at least what someone sensible would ask, why not give him a 10?
Some teachers think that not giving kids 10s will stimulate them to learn more. Bullcrap! They just get put off because they've done really well and didn't get what they deserved.
The best example I can think of was my 8th grade History teacher. In the middle of the class, she would ask someone a random question. If he could answer, he'd get a 10. If not, he'd get a 3. It kept us stimulated and on our tiptoes for the entire year, and none of us got less than 8 on the final exam.

I have seen this is more than one school. The best I heard was that if they didn't turn in the work, the teacher had to give 1 below the grade they would expect. I agree that no work should result in no grade there is no reason for anything else. Unless the schools are receiving grants based on attainment...

He's right to make a stand. If you don't do the work, you should get a 0. For questions with 'right answers', you should be able to get 100%, too, although that's never going to be the case in an essay subject.
Assessed work at uni was graded a 0 if you didn't submit it. We didn't have continual assessment in school so you just got 'not submitted' if you didn't bother (and some columns, our equivalent of lines, to write out for your pains) because numerical scores weren't needed, but it would have been zero for sure if they were.

Yes, I still remember paying the university fee because one of my teachers decided that he never assigned 10 to anyone as the perfect job did not exist.

Surely the key here is the phrase "if the grading is done between 0 and 10" - From what i read, the policy of that school is that it is not between 0 and 10 - and the teacher is employed by the school...
I don't AGREE with the school's policy - but then I have taught at schools here I don't agree with certain policies (like automatic after school detention for uniform violation, but a stern talking to for telling the teacher to f*** off) but that doesn't mean I go out and 'disobey' the policy.
same as if I work for software dev company that uses VB - I don't go out and start programming in C# because I don't agree in using VB...
It's a rare case at any secondary school where any work will be able to be mared at a purely true/false level - so giving a 10 would imply perfection - and it's very VERY rare to see work that could not be improved - and if you give a 10 and someone improves on it you just run out of marks!
Giving zero for work simply not handed in is also contentious. it depends on the reason. If the dog really did eat the homework, should a student get zero? I had a student this week who failed to hand in an assignment because his school laptop crashed and he couldn't retrieve the files because it was being repaired by the techies... Should he get a zero even though I know he has done work (not good work, granted, but he had done enough work on the assignment that I had seen to at least get a mark)
Generally, I find, schools don't deal in numeric marks to avoid this - it's all A-E if there is any work to be marked - and a 'n/a' if nothing is handed in at all.
