My dear fellow, why are you even contemplating a decision!?
Run - don't walk - to your nearest web store (do not stop at the Drones) and git yerself a shiny new Nexus 7 (the fatter the better). I've d my Nexus 7 ever since I got my grubby hands on it around four months ago. May I also recommend this[^] most excellent (and economical) case? I paid $9 (including shipping to Canada) in August.

Got it, thanks. I already installed some of those I think.
One disappointment was that the Google Talk app does not support video - I did some research and apparently there's a bug that's being fixed (it does work on certain hardware but not on the Nexus 7). The bug's got something to do with not detecting the camera.
Skype video chat does work though.

Skip those and get the DoublePower (DOPO for short) TD-1010 10.1" w/Android 4.0 for $140.00 at Wal-mart, Best Buy, NewEgg or Amazon.
Has 8GB; 512MB for apps (needs to be more, though), Bluetooth, 1028 x 600 screen resolution (1080p HD output), Wi-Fi, and an automatic espresso maker (OK, I'm lying there...), MicroSD up to 32GB, 2 USB ports, 1/8" headphone out, stereo speakers built-in.
In short, the thing just ROCKS!
I have 2 of 'em. Dual-core 1.6GHz (3.2GHz); the thing is wicked fast.
Or, call the manufacturer directly on Wednesday ~ doublepowertech.com
It can be rooted to get 4.1 or 4.2 on there (or so I read).

It needs to be standalone as I don't want to install it and it will be handy to use when fixing up idiots computers when installing is not wanted or impossible to do.
I have a bucket load of small USB drives that I keep in my car with MP3's on them. Occasionally I will buy enough albums of a particular artist/band that they get a stick of their own. When I do this it requires removing them from the Various artist sticks I have. My Alpine car stereo seems to read in the order the folders and files are stored on the drive and not by names of the folders.
I have been using JKDefrag as I don't want his newer MyDefrag that needs installing. There doesn't seem to be an option where I get to tell it how I want to defrag done.
Anyone got a recommendation?

Is that maybe not just a date issue? Just set the file/folder attributes to have the same dates. (Can be done easily with Total Commander)

My Windows 7 machine has a fairly good processor and enough memory.
It cold boots in less than a minute.
But from this moment, it takes it from 5 minutes to reach full reactiveness. Yes, I said 5 minutes. I mean before it responds to a single click in less than, say 30 seconds ! Yes, I said 30 seconds.
The interesting thing is that when I look at the performance meter, the PC is essentially... idle, close to 0% CPU all that time.
So what the hell is it waiting for ??
[Don't misunderstand me, I am not looking for a solution. I have been amazed (if not irked) by this behavior since years, through the different versions of Windows. Seems to be a chronic disease.]

A million services that all want to start at startup because they all think they're important (when in reality you need maybe 10% of them) and a fair number of auto-updaters (of which you need zero).
They'll all be 100MB+ because no one knows how write non-bloated code anymore and they'll be loaded simultaneously in order to create extra seek latency.

To be fair it is probably 50 services and 950,000 applications the user chooses to have ready to go.

I don't agree with that. Applications are just passive files and do no harm at boot time.

Err..no.
There are any number of applications that insert themselves into the start up process. For example things that appear in the tray. And that is only one way in which they can show up.

1) check your startup , is there any thing new
2) start , Run (window + R) ----> type msconfig -----> goto Startup tab , untick what ever you dont need at startup
3). Stop unnecessary service like windows media player network sharing service etc.

Sorry, I don't want to. I consider this as a pathological behavior that needs to be denounced. A personal computer should have same or better reactivity as a laundry machine. (So far they needn't boot, let us cross fingers.)

Geez man, what can I say, since I have an SSD and Windows 8, my machine goes from cold boot to ready to use in 9 seconds! I found that slow too!

Merry Xmas, YvesDaoust,
In addition to inspecting, and possibly turning off, start-up programs/services, you might also consider:
1. defragment your hard drive, if you have not done that already: if you have, and that makes no difference in boot-time, proceed to step #2. I use Puran Defrag (free version) to defragment about once every ten days to three weeks.
2. and/or: open your 'Computer folder: right-click on your boot-drive, open the Properties Tab: open the Tools Tab: click the 'Check Now' button: check both "Automatically fix file system errors," and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." Then re-boot, and be prepared to wait a long time while the boot drive is scanned for bad sectors, and (hopefully) any bad-sectors are "fixed."
An alternate to #2: using sfc /scannow from a command prompt: see: [^].

It shows you all the programs that start with your computer, along with how much time they take, and lets you either stop them from starting, or delay their starting until the computer is idle.

This is possible, who knows what is going on under the hood ?
Anyway there is no reason why an application should block others, and in particular system processes.

Maybe not. [^].
I worked twice, in my life, as a department store Santa; once at Nordstrom's on Union Square (an upscale joint) in San Francisco.
I can tell you two things about "being" Santa: if you give a deep belly laugh, "ho ho ho," a few hundred times in one day, you cannot be depressed at Christmas time; and, second: Santa very often will be visited by quite lovely young women who are working the store for the holidays, and having them sit in your lap, can put some extra ruddy in your cheeks (all platonic, of course).

I've done it once, but not at a store - at a home for mentally disabled kids that my wife's son went to for respite before I met her.
Hardest thing I've ever done, emotionally. But they seemed to enjoy themselves!

Girl: Santa, if you make all those toys yourself you must be good with your hands.
Santa: Yes. That and I have a large staff.

I've done it a couple of times at a store, and you're right - there were quite a few young ladies wanted to sit on Santas lap
I kept every single photo that was taken (the store offered free photos with Santa) and its great to look back.
I took advantage of having the professional Santa suit to do a couple of appearances at my sons kindy (current and previous) too.
Best job in e world without a doubt - and you're right, there is absolutely no away you can be even marginally grumpy !
I thought it awesome that family friends, and even my son, failed to recognize me at all - one of e girls who worked (in IT) for me came into the store with her kids, and was gobsmacked when Santa knew their names, the names of their pets etc.
