After a wasted morning of trying to get started with dc.js (js charting library), i was frustrated and went to get some coffee.

When i got back i did another google search, and came up with a code project article:

By far it was the best tutorial i found online, and within an hour or so i was up and running.

It's gems like this article that really make this site shine. I'm surprised that the author of the article didn't update his bio.

Anyway, big thanks to him and all the other authors.

We all hated XP when it first came out.

It was different and treated with contempt.

Then we got used to it.

Eventually we were fond of it.

Then Vista came out and we realised how much we adored XP.

Vista was hated, it came and went like an unloved season, and there were no tears for Vista when 7 was released.

And still XP ploughed on.

It was known, it was stable, it was trusted.

7 was a roaring success, (I love 7), and XP, our old friend, started into the terminal decline and bloated dotage, but still we looked at it with affection.

It is like an old uncle. You knew that many years ago he was a hard drinking hell-raiser who went to war and killed people, but who now sits in the corner at family parties and is only talked to out of a sense of guilt and obligation, and who may at anytime wet himself or keel over and die.

So we are doing the decent thing and putting XP down.

However, there are ghosts, (95% of ATM's are XP Based) and these are going to haunt us all for years to come, so farewell XP, be seeing you soon!

I think 7 will be missed when it is euthenized, but when 8 is killed off there will be dancing in the streets!

You are correct that 95% of the world's ATMs run Windows XP embedded OS, but Microsoft is going to support Windows XP embedded OS until 12 January 2016.

Hopefully, by then the banks will have upgraded to Windows 7 embedded OS. There is more reason to do that sooner rather than later because there are some security exposures that are present in Windows XP embedded OS that are fixed in Windows 7 embedded OS.

Some of which are being able to send an SMS to the ATM and have it give you money, as well as a Mexican hack (Backdoor.Ploutus) using an external keyboard to get the machine to spew money.

I think the banks will be more inclined to replace Windows XP embedded before it's use by date has arrived than general business applications have been updated.

One can only hope.

Personally, I don't think 8 will be "killed off".

IMHO, MS is trying to destroy the "every four years a brand new edition of Windows comes out" mentality and replace it with an "every few months this thing called Windows OS gets updated" frame of mind.

For example, when Android 4.4.3 comes out, it won't be thought of as "the brand-new Android OS", but simply as an update. Even iOS7, with it's radical UI changes, managed to pass through the public mind as an "big update". I think MS desires this sort of public response to Windows Updates, especially as they try to turn it into a more mobile platform.

I loved XP from day 1.

I never was into NT or 2K, but was struggling to make 32 bit software under Win9x. A really heavy load was liftet off my shoulders when XP arrived. Besides, it was magnitudes more stable.

The problem with Vista is that XP was too good. There was little reason to throw it out.
The problem with Win8 is that Win7 is too good. There is no reason to throw it out.

For the desktop computer, a whole new world of possibilities opened up when going from 9x to XP. A number of real needs could be covered. It took a number of years to identify almost all remaining desktop needs, enough to justify a final "tying up all the loose ends in the needs field" with Win7. On the desktop, no real, easily identifiable needs are remaining, that everyone knows about. To the phone market, Win8 was like XP: It finally made Windows a real alternative. Another major round, similar to Win7, will be needed in a couple of years. But then the work will be done, and Windows must move to new arenas if it is to expand further.

I went from 2k to xp and loved it, kept it until drivers no longer available for peripherals I bought.

Along with Antimatter and Dark Matter they've discovered the existence of Doesn't Matter which appears to have no effect on the universe whatsoever!
