Three thoughts from India, on learning:
1. Someshwara Shataka, Kannada language, written about 800 years ago.
Five Modes of Learning (adapted translation):
- From people who know (listening).
- From books.
- By seeing people do.
- Self discovery (I did it!).
- Good company (otherwise, he may misuse the learning to harm society).
While learning, the attitude of a receptacle, like an Ocean:
- Many rivers flow in (many inputs),
- Never overflows.
2. During the learning process, display of arrogance; Bhartruhari's Neeti Shataka, Sanskrit language, written about 1600 years ago:
- When I knew little, I was arrogant; I thought I knew everything.
- When, with the company of knowledgeable people , I got to know things little by little, then I realized that I am a fool, and my arrogance subsided like fever.
3. An important trait of a true man of knowledge: Humility; Kalidasa's Abhijnana Shakuntalam, Sanskrit language, similar time-frame as Bhartruhari above (there's some uncertainty in his date). This stanza is sometimes attributed to Bhartruhari also.
- Branches of trees laden with fruits bend down, and become accessible (humility).
- Clouds laden with rain water spread far and wide (spreading of knowledge).
