Is there a way for me to determine the screen resolution or the size of an object like a table on a web page so I can customize the rendering the table header?

Here is what I am trying to do.

I have a picture I would like to fill the entire with of the table head. Below it is a centered and framed company name. I use div(s) to put a border [ridge] around the graphic and center and frame [grooved border] the company name.

The table has two columns and the row used as the masthead spans the 2 columns. The page was developed using HTML at a width of 1280 pixels.

At lower resolutions, down to 1024 pixels, I would like to put in different width graphics so the page does not extend past the edge of the screen.

At higher resolutions I would like to change the format of the table head to a row that has two columns. In the left column I would like to put the graphics and in the right column the framed company name.

Is there a way to do this? Java script would be OK. I do not want to tie into any MS specific things so as not to alienate a potential customer who may not be using IE.

I'm on-line therefore I am.
