When I was learning asm, c++, xslt, I've read three books on them cover to cover, because one must know all tips and tricks to make something good. However I know something in .net and it works... somehow...

Yes, and I especially enjoy those big red ones that show the face of its dozen (or so) "protagonists" on the cover.

Actually I read them page 1 to end; generally I set a personal goal of at least two coding or tech. business books a month and three non-tech novels.

Maybe I should start setting goals to read a book from beggining to end. Anyone who reads a couple technical books a month would learn a lot real fast.

I have read a few programming books like this but that was like 20 years ago and I had all the time in the world...

Yes I like to read in this way when it comes to learn a totally new technology.
I have already done this for C# when I shifted from VB.
It gives you in depth knowledge of the thing.
After this you can go through other books just picking whatever was not covered in the first one.
