Questionauditing file usage to optimize file storage Pin
lecerf23-Oct-06 2:01
lecerf23-Oct-06 2:01
Hello,

I administrate a small network of 15 Windows XP Pro clients and a Windows 2000 server. As the server's storage media has become full, the users have stored their files on the client machines. I order to return to a centralized architecture, new storage will be added to the server. Various options are available : classical and non-classical.
I call the classical option adding new RAID1 SCSI disks to our server. It is validated by resellers and expensive. But a first analysis showed that many files are used non intensively : we need more archive space, and not so much concurrent quick file access. Thus, this classical solution looks to be to much performant for a low demanding usage.
The non-classical consists in optimizing the technology in regard to the file usage. I have two questions:
1) I am looking for a tool that would compute statistic information on file usage in a network (in the client machines and between clients and server), in order to get a more precise and deeper idea of the file usage
2) Which technology to choose for lower file requests (RAID1 SATA or eSATA, NAS) and what reliability may I expect from it ?

Thank you

Alain
