On windows 98 there was a feature that you could've changed the line "shell=explorer.exe" in system.ini into something like "shell=c:\myprogramdir\myprogram.exe". That would efectively replace the explorer shell with myprogram.exe. What is the way to do it in windows XP?

Thanks a lot, I was trying with "windows xp shell replacement" and some similar combinations and I was getting some not really useful results. Well I'd better start with some "learn to use google" course, first.

Well good question I used it once when I was changing the name of the 'start' button into another name, well you need to change the value of the 'shell' in the registry to the name of your program.

Hello All,
I try to access programmatically C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and place a short cut.
I get access denied error.
Analyzing this I found that any folder in XP Pro is read only,
Removing the read only attributes does not really change the folder attributes permanently as they are still read only viewing the properties again.
Please suggest on how to go further.

The read-only flag on a folder never really meant anything - it was only there for orthogonality (i.e. so that everything that applied to files also applied to folders). Microsoft repurposed the flag to have a different meaning in Windows - it now means that Explorer should check the folder for desktop.ini customizations.

For a web application that can be used by several customers, one of our customers want, that their users can access the application only from some defined computers.
For that we wanted provide to access points to the application: one normal access and one access that requests a client certificate. In the database is a field with a windows username for every customer. If the user accesses the application through the client certificate access the mapped user must be matching the username in the database.
The whole application has to be of course secured by SSL and should use a trusted certificate (from verisign or some other trust center).
I have been told that, to create Client Certificates on this computer the active directory has to be installed. But I want to avoid to install AD on a Computer that is connected to the internet.
Do you have some expirience with Client Certificates and can you acknowledge or disprove the the information about the needed Active Directory?

Certificate Services can be installed without AD. This service can create client certificates.
You can install an Enterprise CA (needs AD) or an Standalone CA (doesn't need AD).
You can install the service from Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

i am not able to access the Run from my start menu. its not visible. keyboard shortcut says, i cannot access it because of administrator restrictions.
i am unable to access regedit and task manager also. please help. its urgent...

Login as an administrator or with an account with administrative privileges.
If you are not the machine's admin, ask for his help.

Well, you implemented a Group Policy that turned off the Run option. You could always navigate down to C:\Windows\System32\CMD.EXE and launch that, then type START GPEDIT.MSC. Open User Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Start Menu and Taskbar. You'll find the "Remove Run menu from Start Menu" policy in there.
Now, if you can't run GPEDIT.MSC, you're not the administrator anymore.

Did you try [WINDOWS_KEY] + R, if that opens up Run dialog?

If the Run box is disable dby Policy, this won't work either.

Your problem is a simple and classical one you are the adminstartor but can't access run, which is because its disabled in the registry, you try to run the registry but it was also disabled, so to fix it create a .NET program that uses the namespace Microsoft.Win32 to access the registry using Registry and RegistryKey ...(Hint: search MSDN for this namespace) and then program this program to :
delete the key DisableRegistryTools (type=DWORD) with value 1 in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
to revive the registry
delete previously made DWORD keys with value 1 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
to re-enable RUN!
And voila problem solved with this simple tweak!!!!!

I have this msg:
virus name: Trojan horse
C:\windows\system32\msime80.exe
I dont have an antiviruse installed on my PC.
Now I will install, but some told me that such virus problem might not be solved, i might need a format, so, is that true? if i installed anti virus like norton2007, i can remove it?
Any help, urgently needed. thanks in advance

No. You never need to format your hard drive for a virus. A simple anti virus will remove the virus just fine. And, I wouldn't use Norton, it's extremely slow and bulky. Instead, try Avast!, it's free and a lot better.

Highly dangerous. First you ought to install an AV. At least have a freeware AV From Grisoft.
