Hello,
I need to add a database where people can search and pull up results. The database is currnetly in Access.

What tools, software, or languages will I be using in order to implement this. And will Access work fine. Thanks you

If Access is fine or not, depends on how many users you will have. You've not said what you're writing this in ( asp/php/asp.net/etc ), so yuo can't hope for more specific help until you say what it's in. Any of those would allow you to use a DB, however.

OK - I'm sure that will be fine, so long as Access scales to your app's size. I have never used PHP, so I can't help more than that.

New to web services here. I know web services have a URI, but do individual web methods also have their own URI? I think the answer is most likely no, but I'm curious.

NO. (AFAIK)

but You can call like http://webservice/webmethod1 or http://webservice/webmethod2 with HTTP_POST.

Well, according to everything I've read on the net, you can call a javascript function from vbscript (and vice-versa). However, When I try to do this, IE6 reports a "Type mismatch" on the javascript function. Here's a code snippet:

Wow - this brings back bad memories.

IE can run VBscript on the client. However, you seem to be running it on the server, in which case, the answer is no. You can't call client code from the server, for a variety of reasons.

as u said client code can not be called from server side, but how abt the statement below:

btnPlaceOrder.Attributes.Add("onclick","javascript:alert('how are u');")

i mean statement is on the server side and is using client side code. thts the way i think. i might be wrong. what do u say?

The statement is on the server side, and it puts a string in the onclick property of an element. The code in the string is not executed on the server, it's put in the html code that is generated. When the page reaches the browser, it parses the html code and put the value of the property as an event in the element. When you click on the element, the code is executed.

The code is wrong, by the way. You don't use the javascript: protocol in events. That's only used when you put Javascript code in an URL.

I'd say that it depresses me how many people are using ASP.NET and have no idea of the server/client division or how web development works.

Like Guffa said, you can inject javascript into the page on the server side, in fact, the server side is one huge engine for generating HTML and javascript, precisely because that's all you can serve to the client, and expect the client to do anything with. So, again, the javascript can only run on the client, getting it to the client is the whole reason the server side exists.

Hi all,

How can I offer the functionality 4 a software to be downloaded after purchasing it (instead of shipping it)..

The problem is that I want a secure access to the software so that only the people who purchase it can download it (only once for each customer), not any1 who knows the URL can download it..

1- provide an account for each customer.

2- store the software(binary data) in a database.

3- when the user clicks to download the software, perform any checks you want before getting the software from the database.

The problem is that I'm using SQL Server 2000 so the size of the software will be much larger than the size of a binary column in the database..
Any Clue??

You can store the files locally and store paths in your SQL Server database.

Hi guys

i am using frame work 1.1, win xp, i am having the following the following erroe while try to open a new web project

"visual studio.net has detected that the specified web server is not running asp.net version 1.1 . you will be unable to run asp.net web applications"

why is that?

re-register the ASPNET user account by running the following at a command prompt:

I have a number of elements on a web page, each assigned their own unique IDs.

If I try to retrieve the element's width by calling document.getElementById('myElement').style.width, I get a null return value. The only way I get a non-null value back is if I manually set the element's width using javascript.

Why?

How do I retrieve the width of an element using javascript without first having to specifically set the value?

You should never do this in one step, you should call getElementById and make sure it found something.

I believe the width property will only contain a value, if a specific value was set. If there is no width value in the style for the control, the control still has a width, but it's set by the browser, not by styles, and so the style is empty.

The width property is most definitely set in a style sheet.

Use Ctrl+Left/Right to switch messages, Ctrl+Up/Down to switch threads, Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right to switch pages.
