I was casually clicking through a couple of Who's Who Pages and found a common pattern of 404s. A few users just type the URL of their website without http://. For them, the web browser is treating the website URL as a subdirectory of CodeProject and is being served with a 404.

Example:

http://www.codeproject.com/script/Membership/Profiles.aspx?mid=6556[^]

Homepage: www.codeproject.com
Rendered URL: http://www.codeproject.com/script/Membership/www.codeproject.com

I have two solutions for this:

1) During Page Render, URL sans http:// can be automatically prefixed with http://.

2) The form which accepts URL from the user can be equipped with a validation enforcing this.

I did a search on "word context menu". The #2 result is titled, "Context Menu with TextBox Filter" with a URL of http://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/View.aspx?fid=1649&msg=2216422 and posted by doubleas2380.

Clicking on the link yields a page not even remotely related to the search results.

Im using of IE 6.0 SP2 when I saw it I was checking it myself I made a long sentence and I saw this problem they shift to width and also I saw other problem now I dont know again its my problem or no when I clicked that link on my previous message I didnt go to that page I went to first page on the VC++ forumhere[^] but if you see address bar,address isnt www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/View.aspx?fid=1647 its www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/View.aspx?fid=1647&select=2362134 that it shows I selected a link.(When I saw that I didnt get any reply I think maybe my message was unimportant but I see it was importance for you Wink | ;)

It never has. We don't show all forums due to lack of space.

I got it too several times yesterday, dont worry, its probably just a dodgy server, just retry what you were attempting to do (maybe several times).
