i do a full backup and take it to a safe deposit box once a month. weekly backups stay with me at home.
(don't forget to archive a copy of the backup software, too ! )

We in Germany (Saxonia) have yet a flood greater than the "Sächsische Sintflut" (Saxonian Flood*). *Flood in the bible
Its real desaster which no-one has ever expected. Many people lost everything. Imagine your house and everything in it is washed away!!!
So there is an outside backup essential!!!
CD may worked with this water desaster but a fire would destroy them quickly.

That was 'how often', this is 'how'.
Suffice to say that last one was due to me *almost* losing data, and this is because I was thinking about how best to actually backup my data now. Two sides of the same coin.

I think that first two options (Copy to a spare drive/partition and Copy to a network share) are not actually a methods of backing up but just making a copy.
You can as well copy files to another folder - most likely in the event of data loss you will loose partition, and if you are attacked by virus you may loose network share contents as well.

I see there are a big portion of ppl use spare partitions/network share for backing up data, and like most of you, I used to backup my data in that fashion... but with recent attacks (or attemps) from the nasty Nimda virus, I only back up my files on either CDs or SCP to my *nix (FreeBSD) box now...
Call me paranoid, but I'm not taking any chances...

Of those who chose this option, what are your experiences like?
It is feasible for us to use this method for our hosting server as it is in a high-bandwidth location, but not for our actual offices as they have just ISDN or DSL connections, nowhere near fast enough for remote backups.
So just curious if remote online backup works for you and what kind of bandwidth you require to use it.

Source is developed on my laptop or desktop machine.
It's archived under source-safe.
Back-ups stored on a seperate machine. (In zip and uncompressed format)
Backed up onto CD/DVD (which is then kept at another location)

Source code is almost the only thing Ih ave on my machine worth backing up. Hence a source control system (currently PVCS.) Works well in two ways - if my machine goes down, the files are on the server. The server gets backed up to tape or something. But even if it did go down, and we lost all our backups, we could piece together the whole set of files from what's on our macines.
This is an occasional Word document that gets in there, though.
You are special and unique, just like everyone else.

You might want to try some version control software then. Try CVS or even a Visual Source Safe for that matter.
Having that all you need to do is to backup the versions database from time to time depending on the amount of changes in the project.
Version control software will usually reduce the space used up for projects backup as well.

I do exactly the same thing!
However, I am starting to get into the habit of using SourceSafe more. I don't use it at work, so its a little strange to get into the habit of doing it when I'm the only developer working on it

I have three computers networked together, and one of them is inside my daughters bed ( i.e. it takes about a half hour to get to it ) So all backups go to that machine. If there's a fire, we're in trouble, but if we get robbed, it's pretty safe. I can remote it from my main machine so it gets shut down properly, etc. It rules.
