heh... Made a lot more sense when there were three slow servers and lots of slow 'net connections. The keyboard stuff got worked into the actual forums years ago.

FWIW, I've finally gotten around to updating CPhog... Been ignoring it for a while, so things have kinda gone down hill, but should still work in most forums.
User script is the same, just hit Ctrl+F5 to reload the CP scripts.
Not sure what happened to David's server...

Trying something a bit different. Ever since David first implemented it, we've used an iframe for hosting the rich text editor. Mostly because up until FF3, that was the only way to do it: you could make a document editable, but not individual parts of a document (the way you could in IE using the contenteditable attribute). This had one rather nice side-effect: iframes maintain their own selection object, so you could have text selected in the outer document (say, something you wanted to quote) and a different selection in the editor document (the place you want the quotation to be inserted).
Unfortunately, there were a couple of rather nasty downsides: setting up an iframe is slow, and putting it into editing mode is more than a little fragile. With some difficulty, the second issue can be worked around, but the speed is still terrible.
So I ripped out the iframe and hacked in a contenteditable div. So far, it seems faster. The editor pops open with barely a delay, rendering appears to be able to keep up with my frenetic typing, and i can even add non-editable elements into the mix (right now, just smileys...).
But before i wire this in too deep, I'd like to know how it works for others. First and foremost: is anyone still using < FF3? Second, are there any odd side-effects that i haven't noticed yet? Is it significantly slower in any common scenarios? And finally, is anyone actually reading this?

I'm using FF 2 and have it set up Just The Way I Like It, and I've got no reason to switch to 3.

Hmm... Haven't tested on it recently, but haven't really made any changes either. Are you using the release or the trunk build?

I honestly don't remember, how can I tell? (This FF install is really old, so I don't remember all the details of how I set stuff up)

Well, I dove right in (meaning: didn't back anything up) and installed FF 3.5, updated GM and other extensions just to be safe, and CPhog looks to be mostly working. I don't see the row of Bobs at the top, or the Bob in the bottom corner, but the editor does work (with a few positioning and keyboard glitches).

I'm testing some changes to the editor template, so if you're using the trunk version of CPhog things might look... a little weird.

When I click the smiley button, I don't get the list of emoticons. A progress bar flashes in the FF status bar for a fraction of a second, like it's trying to load something, but the list never appears.

Thanks, Mike - i guess i've memorized all the smileys i use! I'll take a look at this, it appears to happen with FF3 as well.
