I don't believe anybody can devote more than half of work-hours in coding. Too difficult!!! First of all there are too many distractions (as mentioned) and further you can't code (or think abt it) for so long.
Anybody who does, is a machine to me!!!

My good coding days are usually when all my prep work was done the day before, so I just come in, sit down and hack away.

My 70% to 80% calculation includes the time that I make back in an 8 hour day through working overtime out of choice for no pay when sitting on a problem I try to solve or something likewise.

The rest is spent looking at the documentation on CListCtrl.

Rest of the time is waiting for my co-workers to finish my dependencies...

Generally I spend more time on thinking-thinking, making cfds, dfd's and finally a little bit of coding.
There are also times when I have spent whole day coding...
BUT right now I am being a slacker... spending 90% of time on deals and travel websites, fb, CP etc..

Not just chatting and social networking,
majority of my work goes in analysis documentation and finally when it comes to coding,
it's just translating english to c#
PS: Not to add the totally reduntant, repetitive status update meetings!
