Why do people care about this?
I don't get the facination with the occasional -2 or even -8 on the Rep Points. Such downvotes are easily swamped by the rest of a members contribution. Overall, even with the occasional downvote the overall ratings are probably about right.
So who cares?

Agree. I really only care that I have enough rep points so that I can contribute to the site as much as possible. Having 200K+ rep points means nothing to me.

However, Pete, I do remember you raising quite a stink a while back when you and some others were getting uni-voted a lot.
The reason I brought this up is that the down votes were malicious and had nothing to do with a jerky response or post by me. Don't like what I posted, that's fine by me. Down vote me because you hate me, then that is malicious.

Errm I don't remember that. I do remember posting, several times, about revenge voting which I think is a real problem on the site. I also complain about rampant univoting because it is targetted site vandalism.

They are not a site bug (some would argue this) and they are not a suggestion (by any stretch of the imagination).
I believe you can go to the spammer's profile page and report them there. You are not going to get any brownie points for reporting them here.

That's already been discussed here[^].
I doubt you'll stop the reports here and I'm not convinced it should. Making a small post about them here exposes the spammer to a few more people and as such insure that the spammer is removed faster, before he/she can make even more spam threads (they don't get removed so they keep cluttering up the forums).
Besides like I said in the thread I mentioned, these threads usually are only 1 or 2 messages so I don't think they cause that much noise.

There's a difference, though, between somebody who's an inveterate spammer and a member who has succumbed to the temptation to post a couple of spam messages, but otherwise has been a decent poster. In the first case, deleting the entire account is acceptable, but in the second case, just deleting the spam messages is a better option. The problem with the Report a member option is that it is the nuclear option - it's not a surgical strike.

Yes. However, most of the spammer notices here in this forum are requesting the nuclear option and not the drone, killed by friendly fire, option.

I sort of agree... I've posted one person here before but only because I wasn't sure whether he was a spammer or not (subtle spam), but overall, should probably be left to the community to sap instead of taking up Chris' time. Maybe if we could agree as a community to post these elsewhere for other members to review (so you still bring attention to the spammer and zap him if needed)?

I have just been replying "I have reported this member" whenever somebody reports a spammer here. It sets a good example while not devaluing the service others are providing who may not know about the new report feature.

It does set a good example and I do sincerely commend you for it.
It is not my intention to "devalue" anyone's service, if I have, then I greatly apologize. With that said, I don't think the report feature is entirely new and almost every active member here knows about it or has heard about it or will soon know about it.

I requested Chris Maunder about it; he confirmed that it is appropriate to reports spammers here.
I guess there are too many reports around, and finding such extreme and relatively rare cases like commercial spam separately would be appropriate enough. Some reports ends up removing messages permanently but in extreme violations cancellation of the offender account should be used; usually it does not happen as a result of standard report. The system and organization may have some problem right now, but we need just practical solutions.

Here's my take:
It takes Sean or myself 2 seconds to check a reported spammer and then remove the account, and the sooner these parasites are removed the better. However, I always much prefer seeing the community take care of things, mob-lynch style. Go forth and report. I'll always be here to mop up the ones that got away.
