Thanks for the reply, yes you're right I'm thinking an optional mechanism where basically anyone could send a message to the editor.

One scenario is when a modification is rolled back. As you said, editing is normally done to enhance readability so if it's rolled back the author could add an explanation why.

Perhaps another usage could be when sequential edits are made. The latter editor could add a comment what else has been done for the post. If it's the first edit this info would be sent to the author.

I think the 'big' thing would be to learn how good edits are made and to the authors, what were the initial problems with the post. Also if the author just wants to comment something about the editing, that would be possible.

Now when I'm thinking this a bit more, it sounds more like an 'editor notes' system which would be a parallel chain of comments to the actual question and it's comments.
