I recently noticed that when I followed a link from an email back to a CP message, the message as you would expect was all pale blue. However for some reason, I went to see which post this message related to within the thread and noticed that the subject is not hoverable to display the parent/child lines at the left.
Looks like the styling for a selected message kills the hoverable actions on the subject for the message.
edit: Also happen if you just click the permalink in the message actions turn it blue.

Can you provide a link to the message?
I've been clicking permalinks and the hover-marker-thing still works nicely.
Except if you hover over the initial post... (this is by design since it's not a child of anything)

In the chrome debugger I just dragged and dropped the <a> tag from the subject line of a message to one that was opened via a permalink, then manually edited the name attribute to the number obtained from the permalink.
and voila, link lines now appear for the permalinked blue message.
So, is it because the subject of a permalinked message does not have a <a> tag with the associated, message-link class that is breaking the permalink message links.
e.g. Typical message subject has the following markup within the <td>
<a class="message-link" name="4296545" parent="4296226" thread="4293584" href="/Messages/4296490/Re-Highlighted-message-parent-child-lines-not-acce.aspx">Re: Highlighted message parent/child lines not accessible.</a>
a permalinked message does not.

Yes, it relies on the A tag.

I'd offered to work with an author to fix the formatting on this[^]. I clicked to edit it, and then saw that he'd fixed most of the formatting issues so I left it to approve it. What has been approved is the default template - if you go back to the previous version, you can see what it should have been.
Thoughts?

I have seen many people pasting links from Google results as solution to questions, including top experts. In some cases, without the question being precise and not enough to provide a solution.
Have a look at this question:

You can see my comments and the point that I am trying to make.
My only point is if links are just to give direction to the QP and doesn't answer his question, why aren't they posted as a "Comment or a Suggestion". That is what's been happening in most cases including top experts.
Thats certainly not right.
Please advise. Your interest will be appreciated.

Because sometimes that is the solution. Poster says "How can I do xxx", and pasting that question into Google yields lots of suggestions. So giving the Google link as a solution is the correct thing to do.

My 2 cents:
Should it be posted as an answer or comment is irrelevant, the important thing is that it gets posted. It's the OP that decides if the answer was helpful and accepts it.
My guess is it's because it generates a bit more points.
The important thing tho is that the OP is helped, isn't that why we are here to ask questions and / or help others by answering.
As to why Google search results are posted, if the question is to general a Google search on some keywords might help the OP in his search for the correct answer.
If the question is to easy it's one way to show the OP that he should have searched Google himself first before asking here.

I think you will find that no matter what you try and enforce as the correct etiquette for posting, it will fall on deaf ears.
You have only been on CP for less than 2 months, and I think you will find that Q&A's have been around a lot longer. If it warrants it, by all means educate the poster of their wrong doing or provide an alternative approach. I will warn you though, this can quickly lead to you been downvoted not just against your post, but against everything the voter can lay their mouse on!
Sometimes it is better to just ignore it and move on....

Fortunately, I consider myself a professional and have not done so. After my initial reply to his comments, I have followed your second suggestion (except for this message I guess):

Now why he has started his crusade by pointing his spear at my post is puzzling to me given the target rich environment in QA. I actually did put in the time to find different types of solutions that might help out the OP based on information given in the question.

I am not pointing at anyone. I thought it better to speak to a vast audience (and more experienced and audience) rather than just you who on seeing a negative comment on your post went crazy that he forgot he shouldn't be swearing (atleast).
I accept I am new, and also accept that CP is a shared environment for the benefit of QP. But majority of the answers that you see come as links found on Google. Instead of a concrete solution. That shouldnt be made a trend.
And that is what I am arguing about. Its not about Soren or anyone else individually, its just the trend that CP is walking towards.

Ok, let's take that part up as a discussion in this forum and hear what the broader audience say about it - after all of this I am actually curious.
I do not think I "went crazy". When I saw your two negative comments combined with your 1-vote, I started my reply with my initial reaction. I later changed the 3 letters to "OMG" because you complained, not because I think it is an insult. If it did insult you, that was not my intention and I apologize.
However, as far as I know it is not considered swearing on this site. As a matter of fact, right here next to the box where I am writing this message there is a WTF icon, it looks like this 
It might surprise you, but I do agree with your original point about just referencing Google. To some degree.
I do not care for the answers that simply bring up lmgtfy.com with keywords from the question, but I don't down-vote those answers because it just might be what the OP needs. If I see an answer like that and believe I can help out, I provide my own solution without commenting on the other answer.

I don't agree that users should be forced to accept answers. There are several reasons for this, but the simplest one could be, at this stage their question has not been answered. I've seen various solutions proposed, including not allowing users to post new questions until they accept the answre to an old one, but if they actually didn't get a satisfactory answer, then why should they have to choose one?
Yes, it's courtesy for a user to mark a solution when it's given, but it's not a given. One possible solution is to accept the standard that questions can be closed by a suitably empowered user, after a period of time has passed. So, if a question hasn't been marked as solved after 10 days (for instance), it can be Closed by a moderator. The differentiation would be there at this stage, for all to see, so that later viewers of the question can make an informed decision as to whether or not the answers given actually satisfy the problem. I would propose that all answers are given 5 points on closed answers if no points have been awarded.

It seems to me that the Event column in the Rep. History table could be shrunk a bit to expand the Item column. All my text in the Event column need two rows, but the last row is barely used. Of course it is resolution dependent.
Alternatively, if you move the Reputation column before the Event column, you could just say "Post" or "Vote Up/Down" in the Event column and it would be followed by "Forum Message ..." in the Item column. I always found the extra text in the Event column to be redundant with the Item column.
Also, shouldn't it be "Forum Message: Re: 8 more days" or "Forum Message - Re: 8 more days" in the Item column, instead of "Forum Message Re: 8 more days"?
In addition to also, why does the title say "Reputation History Latest" instead of "Latest Reputation History"? Yoda-ish, this title sounds.

And "Points" and "Reputation" should be moved next to each other; or even merged, yielding cells such as "10 Authority" and "24 Debator"
