Windows 8 is something that you can now download for free, provided that you don’t mind the 90 day licence. Those who pirated the RTM build and have been stuck on a 30 day countdown rejoice, you now have more time. Think of the time savings!

The UI apparently is not too mouse friendly, so will take longer to get things done, so really do not need the performance.

Word of warning Windows ME also booted faster.
Also I have to question the Windows 8 release as win 7 is fairly new , and also can microsoft look me in the eye honestly and tell me why the small trivial features added to win 8 (and all the incompatabilities to come) actually warranted a brand new operating system

With all the resources they have I'm at a loss as to why they don't build a new operating system from teh ground up and leave all the legacy junk behind.
Oh sure, they might have to support Windows 7 side by side with teh new stuff for 10 years but that is hardly too much to ask.

I think over the years having multiple operating systems has taxed their resources... someone must have thought that unification was the key. That person should be fired.  
...if anything, they should have expanded the capabilities of their phone OS to support tablets and touch terminals and left desktop and servers separate.

I would advocate trying to provide common core capabilities, and then do what have to to get them work in the environment. Programmers do not want to have to be in the situation they are in with browsers if they do not have to. Users will not want to have to buy the same application for different environments. You need code reuse to provde compatibility, and to keep costs down. Writting code to provide flexibility would also ensure higher quaility code.

Building from the bottom up has its problems. They did not do well with Windows CE, or many of the Windows phone implementation. It appears to me that the only reason the new windows phone works well is because it is built on Silverlight. Personally I think that a lot of the crap should be tossed, and the OS should be based on something like the Silverlight runtime (KISS), and interface the other stuff to the Silverlight runtime. There would also have to be drivers.

You would think they could do better, but the Windows team is not one of the good teams at Microsoft in my opinion (I like the Visual Studio/Framework.. and SQL Server). It appears to me that Windows team thinks they are king, and damn with the others. They do not seem to be a team player. When Vista came out they did not work with the development tool teams to provide a common base: "What, base our windows code on the Framework, what a horrible idea."

I'm not sure, trying Avalon (WPF) was a huge fail for Vista. Some parts of the .NET framework are good, some like WPF are not. Graphics and computation performance is quite bad in .NET. For phones/tablets you need decent battery life, so it seems like they are heading in the right direction with putting less emphasis on .NET, but more on C++ and COM interfaces.

I think that if they had left it with the Win7 interface, and we got the benefits of the MinWin switchout (i.e. the performance improvements without the forced tablet interface for desktops), I might be more interested in it.
I'm just glad I don't have to support an average user seeing that UI for the first time as they try to start Freecell.

Sounds to me that Microsoft has created another Windows ME, meaning they blew it much worse that Vista. Looks like we will want to hold out until Windows 9, maybe even 10. XP still is a good choice, and Windows 7 is 8 years younger. Should hold me over until 2015.

I am looking forward to the first Android device with Ubuntu OS to come out.
I used to be a MS follower until they tried to put a mobile kindergarden into my desktop, so why wouldn't it work if you put the desktop into the phone?
There is already a build of Ubuntu on Android which works on rooted SGS2 phones, and it even allows you to use the Ubuntu desktop using Android VPN app without a special dock hardware.
