The pinnacle has to be to come up with the next great software idea that you can sell for tens or hundreds of millions before it falls from favour and all value drops away.
Then you can spend the rest of your life doing whatever you want to, indulging your own crazy coding ideas if you really want to, or frittering it all away on hookers and high quality drugs.

I ran my own company for a few years - the software I developed for it won several industry awards but I quickly came to realise I didn't have any real interest in running a company so we sold it to our main customer and I work for them now.

Well, most jobs are quite boring and you get paid more when you get promoted. For us it's the other way round. The job is fascinating and you get more than your boss if you're any good.

How about becoming CEO and get behind developers asses and tell them what to do because you're the kind of CEO that knows how to both CEO'ing and top dog developing!?

I actually play the role of CEO properly you won't have time to follow no developer ass to teach him how to do anything...
After a year, technology will just by-pass you and have to admit that you know much more MS Word and Powerpoint key shortcuts that on any other application

CTO is nice but it's too disconnected from the field and too much political for me.
Being an top notch architect is for what I'm working everyday.
I like to be on top of technology, design and implement solutions.
As years go by, we start designing more and implementing less but still we need to know a lot about everything.

I believe in this rule...
It may not be always right, or may not always be this "aggressive" but it certainly have its roots on reality.
It's like the other saying: Those who cannot do, teach.
Like I said, it's not always true but I think we all have at least a couple of examples from our school times.
