Microsoft under Ballmer has poured billion after billion into Windows Azure which is now, by all accounts a pretty impressive, massively scaled cloud. Now is not the time to retrench. Hey, hey. You, you. Better stay up on that cloud.

There is a direct pipeline from Azure to the NSA.
You know, I have been visiting off and on the High Energy Weapons website just to find out what North Korea is up to. That site deals with atomic weapons. Maybe I have been already tagged as a potential nuclear terrorist.

I would not be surprised to find out that both of your facts are in deed true. I'd put money on the NSA/Azure link, and I think it's rather easy to get on the 'monitor' list these days. "Has an email account" seems to be the main quality one needs, after all.

I went for a couple of job interviews that where I didn't get the job clearly because the boss was intimidated by my [modest mode off] intellectual and technical superiority. On the other hand, a couple of the best bosses I ever had where those who employed me to do what they couldn't - they weren't scared of losing their jobs to me because I wasn't interested in the political maneuvering necessary to do their job - I just wanted to do techy stuff, all the time.
My current boss is the best I had ever had. He is technically brilliant but recognises he doesn't know everything about every type of system and hired me to fill in the gaps and support him and the team - he is also adept at handling the politics and keeping everyone else away from his team so we can get on with it.

I will consider Microsoft on the road to recovery when they FINALLY build .Net into Microsoft Office and not torture us anymore with Visual Basic for Applications...it should have been done 10 years ago and shows huge rifts in the company...nobody wants to invest in a circular firing squad.

OK, you're not talking about Ballmer, are you? Well, the "deeply passionate" does seem to apply, but the bits about software dev certainly not. And "having good numbers" seemed to be all that B really cared about.
Now as to your question. Good question. Maybe Marissa Meyer. At least she comes from a dev background. I have good memories of Paul Maritz. Maybe he's still good at VMWare (but since moving to Parallels, I haven't really looked back). After that, I'm blanking.

As far as I can judge his motivation was mainly killing Google, Apple, and the likes. It was not making customers happy.
