Hello all,
My father's Gmail email address seems that have been compromised:
All his e-mails and all the contacts he had have been deleted...  (I think it's the first time I'm using this emoticon the right way).
He is not using it frequently (it that has been 1 year or so from the last log in).
Apart of changing the password (which I've already done) what are the options to know the damage that have been able to happen?
Are there options to recover the e-mails or to contact Google to try to find out what actions have occurred in the past to know what happened?
What would you do?
Notice that there are 4 old e-mails that are still there.

It could be that if he's not using it, the content gets deleted.

Most likely reason: particularly if the password is unchanged by the "hacker". Most times, the first thing they do is change the password to buy themselves more time - if you can't log in, you can't see anything wrong.
The only instant messaging I do involves my middle finger.

There is a slim chance that this could have been achieved through him synchronising a mobile device with his google account and clearing the contacts and emails from his mobile device.
Google do have a means of getting back contacts as they perform a backup every month.
This is available through the google gmail page - not sure exactly where it is but have a look under settings.
With regards to emails I don't know if they can be recovered.

I actually did what Guy said when I used Thunderbird Gmail app (I think) with the default settings. It had created an IMAP instead of a POP account and I started deleting stuff I thought was still on the server. Lucky for me I was able to undelete most of it. But if I had emptied that trash, I would have been in serious trouble.

Glad you got them back, I didn't.
I got a Blackberry a few years ago and the device had the annoying habit of duplicating contacts.
So I thought I would clear the Blackberry device and re-synch the device - little did I realise that after I deleted the contacts the re-synch would remove every contact I had saved over the past four years from my google account.
This was before google offered the restore from backup 
I have learnt my lesson and am loath to synch devices nowadays.

I have an Android phone and a Gmail account, it automatically synchs my device too. However, I hate the fact that when I transfer everything from one phone to the other, Google doesn't check if the duplicate exists. I have to go in and manually delete all the duplicates. Can't please all the people all the time, I guess.

Did you check the Recent Activity thing? Somewhere around the lower right corner, IIRC. Check if it's really compromised.

Check the auto-forwarding options to make sure his new password was not automatically forwarded to another account. Also, at the bottom, Gmail has a link for when you last logged in and which IP was used. If you click it, it should show you the last X instances.
