I wonder where they got that date from. In Danish, the word 'ragnarok' can be used to describe something chaotic. So, you can say something along the lines of "That shoe sale was pure ragnarok". But I never knew there was a date set for this.

I am sorry to be the first (I just read the OG's message below) second one ranting in 2014 (btw happy new year for all) but yesterday night they pissed me off in such a way...
In germany and many other countries in the world it is usual to use fireworks at midnight to welcome the new year... Perfect, I like it, I come from a very fireworks-lover place, my first New Years Eve I had some pieces of my home town, problem is they are much stronger than german standards (when I fired them, police came in 5 minutes ). Anyways it is really nice when the town/city is covered by the lights the first 30 or 40 minutes of the year. But...
My girlfriend is doctor and has today 24h service in the hospital. Last year (24h at 1st too) she was waken up by the fireworks, so this year she decided to wait before going to bed (around 00:45). Things were quite calmed until suddenly, the "explosions" started again.
I heard her to wake up and blame the noise, so I took a view. There were 2 men with 5 kids aprox. 30 meters far from our window finishing the resources. I got my jacket, I went down to the street, approach them and very politely asked them to get a bit more distance because they had waken her up and today must work 24h in a row.
They said: We are just finishing, we stop in a moment.
I got back home, their moment was still almost 10 minutes but ok. They could have walked a bit, finish the existances and everyone so happy, but they stayed there. Not so nice, but ok... after 10 minutes, they went home... until one of the man with his respective two kids came back and started again. This time even closer to our house. At 01:30 AM I went down another time to ask them to stop or to go to another place (the elephanting case is we have a very big, large and empty place just in front of us so they had plenty of place where noone would be disturbed), but nothing, one of the kids even throwed one towards me and the almost drunk father started to laugh. I just told them: "Next time you go to the hospital with an urgency I hope the doctor had such a night as the one you are giving my girlfrind tonight". Their answer... throw me another one and keep laughing. Oh man, they got me so mad... I am someone quite pacific but I would have kicked their asses so hard...
If I was alone there would have been no problem. I am someone of the night kind of people. I go late to bed and don't sleep more than 6 hours average. But my girlfriend really needs the daily 8 or 9 hours, specially before the 24h guards.
The good thing... I have seen the kids this morning searching for possible units on the floor where they were yesterday. They had found nothing and went back home. Now I where I have to clamp the house bell next time it's 3 AM and I can not sleep.

Get some earplugs and the issue is resolved, people generally do not thank you for being told that they are behaving like jerks(even if it's in a nice way) so the next best solution is use earplugs - I always have some spare for those nights when I know that my sleep might be disturbed by noise.

You didn't get it, the problem was not with me, I was still awake. My Girlfriend was the one without being able to sleep, and she DOES use earplugs but they don't help if the fireworks are 20 or 30 meters from you.

I don't expect them to thank anything, but I do expect a father to act a bit mature and don't be such a jerk encouraging his kids to be even more jerks than he is.
I would have not said anything in other circusntances, but I think that if you go to a hospital with an emergency you want the doctor attending you or the member of your family to be as fittest as possible. And on the other hand... if afterwards something happens because of an attention error or something like that, noone gives a sh*t on the doctor and the circuntances, only see the error.
So yes... if someone doesn't let me sleep, I can get mad, but it's ok, it is not so bad. If someone doesn't let my girlfriend sleep before a 24h guard... yes I will try to defend her. Because she (and others in the same kind of responsability jobs where lives are the bet) deserve that little piece of respect.

Oh indeed - with the exception of suits (which are my department) I am not required for clothes shopping for myself, she handles that.
But when shopping for her, she needs the normal combination of chauffeur, size checker, mirror and pack animal... 
And the one thing I won't let her shop for alone is bras: since she has no idea what fits and what doesn't, and I had to change her width / cup size from 36D to 38C and up the strap width when she first moved in. (My first "real" job as a still-at-school 14 year old was in a lingerie shop and you can bet I paid attention!)

The point that she's from an old family from Morocco where traditionally all home-oriented work done by the wife. So when I got all the kitchen tasks on me (I love cooking and backing) she thought she's in haven (of course she is - she's with me) and I was able to get away from the shopping thing - as I hate those malls we have here...

I was drafted into shoe-shopping with one young lady.
Every single shoe shop in town (and this at a time when Guildford was approaching the Shoe Event Horizon[^]1) so it took all damn afternoon. Result? We went back to the first shop she tried, and she bought the first pair she tried on... 
The second time she tried this, I waited until she tried on the first pair, then pointed out the nearest pub and told here that was where I would be until she bought them...
