I don't know who these hiring managers are. But if I get a candidate that talks up open-source involvement my first reaction is... "so?"

I can see that if it's used as a way to vet someone's work. See if you like the way they do things and you can also see if they know what they say they do.

The repeat out loud of the question (for them to start researching) and the dramatic pause are easy to hear once you start listening for them.
"So what you're asking me is..." etc.

I'd think it the potential cheatability would depend on what the record shown was.
Little/unknown project with the candidate as the primary/only submitter would raise a red flag.
Claiming to own an inactive account with a pseudonym and being unable to prove ownership of the code because 'I don't have that email address anymore' zillions of red flags.
On the other hand an account that's been active for an extended period of time on a project with 3rd party use and multiple devs (not a sham project/copy pasta fraud), with the account linked to the candidates email (not claiming to be someone else) seems like it'd be a reasonable indicator of what the person can do.

I wish it were that easy. Sadly, contributing to Code Project, having a couple community oriented websites, etc., it's like talking to a wall with most recruiters, except you don't even hear the faint echo of your own voice. Black hole is more like it. It's really weird, like they can't think outside of the box of questions that they have.
