If it is really broken, in the sense that it suddenly turned out to be insecure, I wonder how deep the sh*t is that we're in. Probably deep. It'll take a while before all the consequences surface.

The fact that they've never supported w8 tends to give credence to having lost interest in the project and the announcement being their way of shutting down by nuking their bridges...
The results[^] from the first part of the crowd funded code audit[^] started last summer suggest that the code base is in fairly lousy shape:
Quote:
Update the Windows build environment.
The current required Windows build environment depends on outdated build tools and software packages that are hard to get from trustworthy sources. For example, following the reproducible build instructions at https://madiba.encs.concordia.ca/~x_decarn/truecrypt-binaries-analysis/ requires access to VC++ 1.52 (released in 1993), in addition to various Windows ports of GNU tools downloadable from wherever they can be found. Using antiquated and unsupported build tools introduces multiple risks including: unsigned tools that could be maliciously modified, unknown or un-patched security vulnerabilities in the tools themselves, and weaker or missing implementations of modern protection mechanisms such as DEP and ASLR.
...
Improve code quality.
Due to lax quality standards, TrueCrypt source is difficult to review and maintain. This will make future bugs harder to find and correct. It also makes the learning curve steeper for those who wish to join the TrueCrypt project.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

You can continue using TrueCrypt for locally encrypting files, source code and so.

The discussion below made me recall - I once told someone I make software and she replied, "Oh so you design stuffed toys?"
From then on I'm a computer programmer if anyone asks, even though only a small fraction of my work is actual programming.

One time somebody asked me what is my job, I said "I'm a computer programmer." Then he asked, "So, you're a party planner?"
Yeah, from now on, I'll call myself a Software Developer/Engineer.

Them: So what do you do for a living?
Me: I'm a programmer.
Them: ....Oh...OK.
Me: I'm in IT. I work with computers.
Them: Oh good. Can you take a look at my computer. It's become slow and sometimes it won't start.

Here's another one.
Them: So what's your job?
Me: I work as a programmer.
Them: ...Oh...OK.
Me: I'm in IT. I work with computers.
Them: I see. So you work in a call center?

Just great! For some reason why I like being a programmer is because people can't mess with me given the fact that they don't know what I'm actually doing.

As an engineer, I never have to deal with explaining what I do. So few can understand it that they mostly walk away or change the subject, sorry they asked.

Well, I don't want, but I have to (just to be nice). I don't know what I have but I keep on attracting nosy people. They always ask anything about me and try to pretend that they understand the nature of my job, although they didn't.
When I was in college, when they knew I was taking Computer Science, they keep saying I'm going to be a call center agent after.
Once, I applied on a television network and they ask me if I'm going to be a newscaster.
Then I applied on a bank, and they ask me if I'm going to be a teller.

holy crap on a cracker - these threads have taken a turn for the ball-less.
I'm an EE that writes sw. Period. I do it because I love electronics and have a deathly fear of anything at and over 120V.
Do you people even understand the difference between civil engineers and electrical engineers? The civils build targets.....
Seriously, the worse thing I ever saw was in the .com boom where anyone who could hack html - and I mean old school - meant the could "do software". Yeah, I said, have fun. Call me when you are serious.....

I've been nearly electrocuted at 230V, hasn't stopped me from working on electrical / electronic projects yet. What I can't understand is how people can work on things running at hundreds of kilovolts.
