No tiping here in Spain (neither in Catalonia)... at least not as it is understood in other countries in which the tip is a specific % of the global cost.
Here we give tips only if the service have been special in any sense (a nice detail on the people who served, a good relationship with them...).

If you leave a tip in China, they'll run down the road after you to give you the money you'd "forgotten" -- and this is in places where they get paid next to nothing.
I always feel ashamed at not being able to demonstrate that I appreciate the effort they put in, but it embarrasses them if you try to make them keep the money, and that's the exact opposite of what I want to do.

What annoys me is London cabbies expecting a tip.
You went via the longest, slowest route you could think of, and you expect me to pay you extra? Go Elephant yourself...

Popular myth - black cabs do not go long routes to top up their income. Getting you there as quickly as possible is what its all about, and on to the next job.

I guess it is culture thing. I personally feel one is paid to do the job. If he does it good, employer gives raise/promotion. I mean I do not expect the client to give me tips if I write some good code.
Here in India, it is your choice. You want to give, you don't it does not matter.

Wait people here get taxed at 15% of their food sales and make very little in wages so depend almost solely on tips so I tip well, ex used to be a hell of a wait person but if they don't do a good job I also don't leave them a good tip. In fact if they are piss poor I leave them a quarter which is an insult, but only had to do that a couple of times.

While I have no specific issues with tipping for good service, it's annoying that it's expected (at least here in the US). But what REALLY gets me is that restaurants can pay less than minimum wage (which is itself a joke) because the server is expected to receive the additional earnings (which have to be reported to the IRS) in tips.
The Federal minimum wage for non-tipped workers is $7.25, but for tipped workers is $2.13! (source[^])
It's yet another thing that pisses me off about government, business owners, and our so-called "market economy" system.
And yet, we all (including me) don't do anything about it.

The meaning of the tip is "I am so happy that you deserve more".
It is an act of appreciation and respect, not for the person, but for his exceptional work.
When tip is mandatory (like in Canada), then its purpose is corrupted.
And so, Canada is no different than Japan. Since in both case you have no way to really show your respect for the work, and the waiter no way to get the feedback. (In Canada, except if you give more than the mandatory, which is already 10% of the bill)
I like to have the choice to give, to keep intact the original purpose of my act.

I don't normally have that many, and today I've already had two! Woah, It's a good day! 
But to get to the point: I've been thinking about the Scottish issue that everybody keeps raving about! Whereas I generally support peoples right to live as they choose, I can't help but think that the Scottish are being very selfish in this respect.
It really is not all about them. A decision of independence will have massive effects on the government budgets in EVERY single other country around the world... Why, you ask? Because they will have to rewrite and republish all the Geography school books in different colours... 
Is it really worth it? To paraphrase Homer Simpson: If something is a lot of work to do, it's not worth doing...
