I have a BMW 5-series, and most of the time the high beams is not needed. On the motorway most people move away, by themself, when they see the BMW comming from behind 
I have never seen that happen with all the other cars I have had.

That is kind of what my dad has always done when making normal turns in the city.
Here's one for you. If you ever find yourself driving in Mexico on a country road (or small highway) with one lane in each direction and you are behind a big truck who suddenly turns on his left-turn signal, that is the trucker telling you the coast is clear for you to pass him  .
It is something that takes time getting used to.

I imagine so. I always hesitate when it happens to me. Normally you can tell that he is not really getting ready to make a left turn, but man, you are in trouble if he is.

Maybe for city people. This is the way truck drivers (courteous ones) indicate it is safe to pass in many countries with long roads and big trucks.

Just to make sure we are on the same page. In Mexico they drive on the right-hand side of the road, so they use the signal on the side where you are going to pass them to indicate it is safe for you to pass.
I just don't recall seeing that in other countries.

They drive on the left side of the road in South Africa, right? So in that case they are using the right-turn signal to show you it is safe to pass?

No they use the left turn indicator, and pull in to the "hard" shoulder, so you can see the road ahead. And most roads in SA (the parts I have driven on) are long and straight so you can easily check that it's safe.

Where I live you can observe many drivers who never indicate. This arises from a lack of police to enforce the traffic code and a huge reliance on cameras as revenue raising tools i.e. if a camera can't catch the misdemeanor you are OK to do it.

Happens in the UK, in all cicumstances when drivers are turning or doing anything, halfway round a corner, on a roundabout, changing lanes, stopping ... even worse are the morons who think hazard warning lights are a substitute for all signals.

Happens in Slovenia too. And a lot of people don't turn their turn signals at roundabouts - so if you are waiting to enter one,
you have to guess where he/she is going to go out. I usually wait like an idiot, almost crashed a few times by being too eager in that kind of a situation.
Never mind people telling you where they came from, not where they are going.
And also what is it with the people who go out of the motorway but brake to almost 60kph(before driving at least 120) then go on to the lane
that leads out, isn't that supposed to be the other way around ?

I was looking up the Autobahn and noticed in some of the pics, that the German police have Audi police cars. Cool. Audi automobiles are considered higher end here in the States and our police would never buy a fleet of Audi cars.
BTW, how fast were you going, on average? Most of our highways here in the States are max 55-65 mph.

65 mph is not that different, only about 12 mph difference to the limit we have in Slovenia. Which no one keeps anyway - sometimes me included.

I think it might have something to do with the idea that much lower speed limits, saves lives, but I don't necessarily buy into that logic.

Well I can understand that when people see a speed limit, they say I'm driving just a few miles over the limit, so that shouldn't be a problem. And it is logical, that
speed limits are a bit lower in towns or on dangerous roads. But driving on a long straight road, there as you have written I also don't agree with the logic of
slower speed = saving lives.

Well I was in Autobahn exiting the 120 Km/h section to Unlimited Speed area. So I was acceleratiing to 160 km/h ( thats the max my car can take without giving any vibration). I think he jumped into my lane when I was around 145-150

I would love to go that fast on straight routes without reprisal from the cops. I understand the speed restrictions in certain areas, as is implemented with the Autobahn, and I think it is a good idea but for the straight routes I think the U.S. could raise the speed limit considerably.

In my daily commute to work of 50 km , I have only 15 km of Unlimited speed limit. And that gets covered in just a minute 
Yes ,but in gneral you will have stretch of straight roads with no speed limits ( only in autobahns) and thats why Poice here need to have a top end Cars so that atleast they can make an attempt for a car chase.
