The warm rain was making temporary craters in the red mud as I trudged to where the yellow flowers, their petals waving angrily at the storm, were surrounded by the stark contrast of the blue and white Police Incident tape, the ends of which flapped maniacally in warning.
"Daffodils?" I said to the young constable, visibly shivering in the moonlight.
"Sir, yes sir!" He'd been watching too many American army movies. I played along.
"At ease, soldier"
I surveyed the scene. It was obvious someone had taken care with this site - the third we'd found. I knew we'd find no evidence - no prints, nothing. This guy was meticulous. Just a circular copse of flowers, neatly planted and mulched. It was the mulch that was the problem.
Red and glutinous, with hair mixed in with starkly white pieces of bone.
"Anything new?" I asked the young copper - expecting a sad shake of the head. I did a double-take that Dean Martin would have been proud of, as the constable replied "Just this, Sir. Looks like he dropped it when he was disturbed."
I looked to where his hand pointed; rainwater pouring off the end of his finger toward the chain.
A clue at last!
The chain was heavy, looked new. About four feet long. And covered in a macabre mess of matted fur and gut.
"Looks like he killed 'em here, then spread 'em" I mumbled to myself.
"Sir?" asked the still shaking copper "Can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead, son"
"Well, Sir, why Daffodils? I mean, don't you usually get Tulips from hamster jam?"
Time seemed to freeze. Two and two suddenly stated to add up to four again.
In this stormy copse in Fig Tree Pocket I'd finally solved the case; now I just needed to prove it.
It's too dangerous for me to reveal the culprit in writing - but I'll leave a clue...
