That's how I have 3 monitors hooked up to my Surface Pro. I'd get more if I had the physical space.

I use only one 23inch at work, because the second you can get is cr@p and I cherish my eyes.
Yes I write code in notepad mainly xsds and xmls  Who doesn't love the all time crashes of VS during xsd transformations debug.

I still use 1 monitor at work.
But actually I'm working on a Qt application running on a Raspberry Pi using a small (480x320) touch display. So the main monitor is used for hanging around at CP, cross compiling for the Pi using a VM with Ubuntu (Qt Creator to answer the notepad question), and accessing the Pi using PuTTY (SSH). Another monitor is connected to the Pi's HDMI port to watch the debug output. Does this all this count as 3?
I use Notepad++ instead of MS Notepad, but not for programming. However, on the Pi I'm using nano for small programs and scripts.

Who can manage development on only one monitor?
Between the desktop and the laptop I have seven; the laptop built-in plus an external and the desktop can support up to six but I ran out of desk space. ...and yes, I have a valid use for all of them.

Somewhere in the photo archives is my setup (several years ago), six monitors spread across two desktops (two monitors each) and two laptops, all glued together with Synergy for single mouse/keyboard interaction. A bit unwieldy, now I just have three, but sometimes 4 if the laptop is in use on my desk too.

I use notepad for notes during coding, but I use notepad++ for editing things like config or PHP files when I don't already have the IDE open and I need to make a quick change.
Personally, I find nothing wrong with just one monitor. There are times I want a change of scene (and less noise from the fans on the desktop) and will spend the whole day working somewhere else in the house on the laptop.
Though, now that I've got my HOPE project set up such that there is a full-screen design surface and a full screen docking UI for the applet itself, it pretty much demands three monitors (the third being the IDE) for development.

I'm new at work, and haven't been assigned a proper desk or issued a laptop yet, so I'm still on one monitor, but the blazing fast machine, with 20GB ram, behind that monitor does help make up.

Code in notepad!?
Occasionally I will plug in an external but lately I just spit the screen. Debugger on one half and the application on the other half. It's a bit of an adventure to be sure, but portable.

Considered getting a second at home, but these days all I do there is play games, so what's the point?
Ok, technically I have three screens at home, except one is a 55" TV, and one is an old VGA panel that's not compatible with my new video card (Only supports DVI-D/HDMI)... That one's usually hooked up to the Ubuntu box that I almost never turn on.
At work, though... I've always had two screens... And considering how much I multitask, I could really use a third...

Got 3 at home and at work. Work is 1x19 1280x1024, 2x23" 1680x1050. Home[^] is 1x30" 2560x1600, 2x20@ 1200x1600.

I use two - 17" laptop screen, but primarily use my 46" Sony Bravia TV. Standard hidef screen (1920x1080?), but it supports 240 Hz vertical refresh. Picture quality is excellent, even at normal (programming) distance from the screen.

The built-in speakers are pretty decent as well, whether for a Skype call or a bit of Xbox play...

I resisted a second monitor for a long time, I identify with Bob.[^] But then I decided to get a second one. It's nice to have code on one screen and the application on the other while debugging.

Technically, I may have 4 'monitors' going at once...2 laptops and 2 workstations.
Usually though, it's just a laptop and a workstation with a single monitor when I'm at the office.
My main workstation can drive 3 monitors. I tried running two a long time ago...after every restart, windows would screw up the configuration, the end result being that my icons were rearranged.  Maybe the next build (coming soon) will work as it should.
As for notepad, I may have several instances of it open (on my single monitor) but really only use if for scratch areas, or the occasional script, but not 'real' coding. Oh wait, you were being sarcastic right?

I use a 27" mac with a 2nd 24"
The 27" would be plenty - I rarely go full screen on it - but the 2nd monitor is a ice logical separation of concerns!
although, if I do try to work across both monitors, I end up with a headache due to looking back and forth between them - but that's because my desk layout is crap
