He actually asked about C since that was the last language that he worked with back in the late 80's, so I was really targeting the c++ feature...then figured, wte, he has a new computer with more space and horsepower than he'll ever need, so just install everything, and this seemed to fit the bill.

Well I've used VS a lot over the years and definitely think it's one of the best products to come out of MS. With that said though, recently it seems like they're just putting out versions just to charge for upgrades (which makes me start to dislike VS).

Now, I do have some hobby-projects at home but those are being built using SharpDevelop. One can run that from USB, it's light and pretty quick.
..because at home I do not need a state-of-the-art IDE; there's no TFS to integrate, no IIS to contact, no EF6 nor MMMVC9 in my projects. All that's required there is some simple way of building, some syntax highligting and that's about it. MonoDevelop would even do the trick

Yeah man, we're getting too convoluted for our good. Thar be genius and elegance in simplicity. I hoping it's a lot of docs shipped with it. The thought of using 35 different frameworks for Hello World seems rather daunting.

That's not what I said; I wouldn't want to do the azure-project at work using SharpDevelop. There's lots of WinForms, there's TFS (wouldn't dare to do without at work), the ability to shelve stuff, gated checkins, opening a mini-dump that someone made with the taskmanager (!), third-party addins (like a resource-editor that is a bit more complex than the default one) and lots more.

That, to me, is Visual Studio.
Write a visual file-editor, and plug it in there. Write your own TFS, hook it up. Seriously, there's an example in the VS-SDK. I don't think you can give all that power in a simpeler form. For the beast that it is, it is genius.

You're not required to use all the file-extensions in Notepad++. If you want to stop at "txt", than that is supported too.

I downloaded the VS 2015 CTP this weekend and it is also about that large. I copied it to a USB backup drive thingy.
To make matters worse, I tried the same with SQL Server 2014 and it refused to run unless I burned it to a DVD.

Format the darn stick as NTFS. Fat32 only supports 4 gb file size.

Tend to agree, Microsoft needs to peel back the installer and downloader with options, do we need SQL Server, no!, do we need C++, no!, do we need this shite, no!, what we want is options and it compiles runs and delivers package, don't care about the other stuff.
On the other side, I've got beaglebone, (intention is .net) and tried to download pre windows 10 version which over 8 gig (as you have to build yourself or package it), flick, that's bleep##, umm do need all that rubbish, just want the arm code, and not as an image, all I want is to add my drivers for i/o, a/d etc.. to the build, Flick how difficult can student make it! , don't want the the rubbish!

An other option is to unpack the iso to an external (flash) drive, using 7-zip or something like that. Then it will fit on other filesystems too.

You can copy it to your USB-stick. You only have to 'unzip' your ISO-file and then copy the unzipped folder to your USB-stick; you'll see it'll work.

totally. But then again I read somewhere that most shops think disk space is cheap; I for one do not agree with this mentality. There feels like an ever increasing 'glut' going on. I try to keep the installs small (around 1mb or 2) and have optional add on installers for any extras someone may want.

That is why I and many more like me use Visual Basic 6.0. It is small (portable version ~6M) and very fast.

I also still use VB6 for a lot of stuff. Too bad it won't install on anything past Win7.  I'm sure I will be needing a dedicated VM in the near future!
