MS has been reacting to what other people are doing for years. I mean, one of the "new" features in Windows 10 is multiple desktops... that's been around in Linux for AGES! Ubuntu had the "online" search integration a few years back but scaled it back based on privacy concerns from users. Snapping in quarters and halves has been around in Linux for a while now.
Now, not all is bad about reacting though. A lot of time, you do get a more refined experience from a product that comes out later (since they had more time to think about it and see how people react to what's out there)... but it's a reaction nonetheless.
Think good Linux desktop distros are ahead of Windows by a few years (see Linux Mint).

Late last week, Microsoft pushed out a new build of Windows 10 to those of you who are participating in the 'Insiders' program. The latest version of Windows 10 comes with it many new features, some easily accessible, others not, but one thing is for certain, the Charms bar is dead. It's safe to move your mouse near the right side of the screen again

Honestly, if you are interested in how the Internet has affected and affects us you should read the fantastic book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr (amazon link)[^].
It is a very balanced view of how it has affected our attention span, our thinking modes, etc.
It's based upon scientific research and the author keeps a balanced view -- he's not a luddite.
It is so good and goes through so much history of learning, media, how our brains work etc, that I read it twice. Fantastic.

Interesting that you said that. One of the studies revealed by the book is related to reading on the Internet vs. printed materials.
Because your brain is distracted by links that could possibly be clicked you don't absorb the material as much as you would if you were read printed materials. I'm summarizing but when you read the study in the book I believe you'll be amazed. It has to do with how executive brain function is trying to use self control (to not click links and continue reading) and that continually (unbeknownst to ourselves) challenges the brain to focus and remember and learn.
