With the release of build 9926 of Windows 10, I have had some time to get to know the new build. One of the things discussed at the Windows 10 event in Redmond was an update to the browser, codenamed Project Spartan, which is a new fork of Microsoft’s browser. And hopefully better standards support

Just finished my test cycle of the new IE engine...
No standard changes I saw (but remember that I do not test anything).
The speed is better, but it only beats older IE and not Chrome (again my tests are partial).
So if Microsoft will hold to the promises we will see very good IE coming...

In html5test it has 5 point over IE11...

For years now, we Linux fans -- yes, myself included -- have been dreaming of the fabled "Year of the Linux Desktop". What does that mean? To have Linux-based operating systems snag a bigger piece of the desktop pie, if not a majority. While a majority share of the desktop is admittedly absurd, a respectable share was always something I considered a possibility. Kind of the anti-"Year of Linux"

I partly agree, but I wouldn't put undeserved merits on MS. Everything that's happening to Desktop Linux is accountable to the Linux community itself.

MS has been reacting to what other people are doing for years. I mean, one of the "new" features in Windows 10 is multiple desktops... that's been around in Linux for AGES! Ubuntu had the "online" search integration a few years back but scaled it back based on privacy concerns from users. Snapping in quarters and halves has been around in Linux for a while now.
Now, not all is bad about reacting though. A lot of time, you do get a more refined experience from a product that comes out later (since they had more time to think about it and see how people react to what's out there)... but it's a reaction nonetheless.
Think good Linux desktop distros are ahead of Windows by a few years (see Linux Mint).
