I only use Acronis to make images of disks. For this I use a free Western Digital version, that you can download from the WD website. The only problem is that the WD version only works if you have at least one WD drive attached to the machine. It has been working great for many years. Last year I tried a trial version of Acronis 2014 but could not get it to work at all. So I dumped it like a hot potato and went back to the old WD version, that still serves me well to this day. I don't know whether the version that WD currently offers on their website, is the same as the old version that I have.

I'm using Macrium Reflect. Had no troubles with that so far but admittedly I'm only using the basic functionality of taking and restoring disk images.

You might give one of the following a try:
Commercial: Macrium Reflect : www.macrium.com
Open Source: Clonezilla : clonezilla.org
I have used both of these, but I like Reflect better because I think it is a bit easier to use.

Speaking for myself: I would like to see it. I may want to dump my version of Acronis due to the Western Digital constraint, but no way am I going to pay for their product that is supposed to work with any make drive!

I have 3 WD drives and downloaded the Acronis WD version and it wouldn't run either. A little window came up and read Attach and WD drive to continue but no drives listed and of course there was a link to buy the full product. Uh let me think about that for a minute...I don't think so!

I wish I still had that version. If I went back through backups I my accidentally have a copy but I'm sure the 240 character product key is long gone!

Try DriveImageXML[^], it's free and it worked the last time I tried it (windows xp times)...

DriveImageXML. It's free for non-commercial use.
I use it every two weeks on my Win-7 machines. I haven't had to do a full disk restore (lucky me), but have browsed into the image to copy out individual files and folders.

I worked in a lot of small R&D shops and on a limited budget I used whatever was free because the companies I worked for usually didn't put out for frivolous stuff like software! What the hell have I got a software team for?

If it is an alternative to Acronis you seek, then you might want to try Ghost (google it with imaging  ).
Tough i reccomend you stick with acronis, which works better in my opinion.
