Choosing between those is like choosing whether you want to get kicked in the groin or have a hot poker jabbed up your nose?
I'm currently with XFinity. Not that I really wanted to be. The only reason I chose them (literally the only reason) is because the cable box plug is on the wall next to where I have my router. The U-Verse jack is on a different wall.

Did they raise the price on you ?
If so, was it a surprise increase ? Was it a fine-print gotcha ?
They are advertising a bang-up good deal on their website if I don't speak to a human (which puts various questions in my mind; another topic for later) but supposedly they will keep the price for one solid year.
They also advertise that this is a no-commitment offer.
I'm wondering how they can put their modem/cable/whatever box in my place for $20 a month and make a profit.
I would be surprised if they paid less than $75 for it.

That $20 turns into approximately $30 after the modem lease, various taxes and surcharges, etc...
They haven't changed the price on me yet. Been with them for 5 months I believe, and my bill, while larger than the bold text on the web page, hasn't gone up since the first one. After 12 months is over, then it'll go up, I'm certain of it. But, AT&T was the same (I was with them elsewhere). Kept the price steady for the contract, but as soon as it expired, the price increases were pretty regular.
Also, if you do decide on cable, look into buying your own modem. I bought mine on Amazon for $60. The monthly modem lease was going to be $6 per month. So even if I leave after my year is up, buying the modem outright saved me $12.

I don't own a TV (it's a lifestyle thing; been going on for decades). Do I still want my own modem ?
Not having the first clue, I just looked for "...Internet Modem for comcast xfinity..."

Is that what I want ?
If so, it looks like I'll be laying out about $70 for the modem.

In some ways, yes, you are correct. I just consider it a part of the package deal of living in a small town.
Were you (or are you currently) with either of those two providers ?
They both have good deals, if I can believe what I read on their websites.
They also both have enough fine print and "stipulations" (cough, cough) which which give me cause to pause before I proceed.
The big question from me to you (if you have one of them at this moment) is this...
Did they create any surprise fees or charges beyond their promotional package ?

Six feet refers to number of legs and hence a bug and listening to you comes from slang to eavesdrop which is to earwig on a conversation. Hence the bug earwig
