I've just realised that a phrase I have been using all my life* - "Cast in stone" - doesn't make any sense at all. There are many ways to work with stone, but the amount of heat needed really prohibits casting it.

The phrase I have always known is "Set in Stone". This indicates that, usually a rule of some sort, has been engraved on a stone - a bit like the 15 commandments.

I believe that term cast derived from "etched", possibly? Etched in stone. More accurate than Cast in Stone. I'm sure an American did that.

I usually hear 'set in stone'. I have heard one person say 'grown in stone', which got a lot of confused looks. He also said things like 'Existing doesn't exist' and 'shells cause phones'. He was a bit weird.

I love it!! People like that give me a good chuckle. I sometimes would rather hang out with "weird" people than "normal" people. They just seem more real to me.
With the caveat that "weird" doesn't translate to sadistic serial killer.

Another thing this guy did was wear completely mismatched (and often inappropriate) clothes to school. He even wore a (gasp) mankini with a scarf and mittens once (This guy is 5'6" and 350 lbs. And no, he is NOT Sean!)
He got expelled for that one. And arrested.
I think he was crazy.

I did watch an Ancient Aliens that proposed that the Pyramids were created by casting stone into the shapes and sizes required. They weren't really able to explain exactly how that worked but it was entertaining.

Cast in stone implies to me that the stone is the mold, and something else is cast in it.

That's even worse - imagine trying to make the cope and drag from stone - they'd weigh a ton, and the mould itself would have to be really simple as it would need to be carved.

Pretty addicted to Visual Studio, myself. If I have to work on a language that's not natively supported, like PHP, I get an add-on like VS.PHP. I even bought the addon for Arduino development because the one that comes with it sux.
Having to learn a new environment's operation, look and feel is a distraction is why, I guess.
