If both machines are in a network you have several possibilities. You can use Samba to mount a Windows network share in Linux or to share a Linux directory to Windows machines. For FTP, you must run a FTP server program in one machine and a FTP client in another.

If you are running sshd you should be able to secure ftp to your home directory. Some of the nicer windows ssh clients have sftp integrated.

Over the last week or so, clicking on a zip link in IExplorer downloads and opens the zip file directly in Winzip, As opposed to downloading and saving the file (after prompting).
Does anyone know what has happened to my IE settings and how to change this back to the original action?

In IE6, open the Tools menu and select Folder Options. Click the File Types tab, then scroll down the list of types to ZIP. Select it, then click the Advanced button. Select the "Confirm open after download" checkbox, then OK twice to close the dialogs. In earlier versions of IE the Folder Options function is located in the View menu, I believe. In versions 4 and earlier you have to edit the registry - check the Knowledge Base at Technet for info on this.

Thanks. I have this problem too, so I'll use this fix.
One more thing - it's not in IE , it's in Explorer.

I used to have the Ctrl-Alt-Del before logging in option turned on in WinXP, but since I reformatted, I can't find the setting anymore - all I get is the 'simple' user manager control panel applet, I can find nowhere to change it to 'advanced'

Don't have XP so the following may be nothing more than a pile of sh*t. To do this in Windows 2000 Professional I do the following -
1. Go to User and Passwords in Control Panel
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Under the Secure Boot Settings group box
4. Check Require users to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete before logging on

Thanks for the reply Yes, that is what you do in Win2k, but the problem is that XP by default hides the 'advanced' features from possible dumb users, and I can't find where I turned that 'feature' off last time. Thanks anyway

Hmmm... No, it's still in 'simple' mode, so it only asks "Show welcome screen" and use "Fast User Switching". The problem is to get it into 'advanced' mode so it asks about the Ctrl-Alt-Del thing... Tks anyway

What causes a Console application to get terminated when run through a service?
It happens only on some machines. I have seen it on Win 2000 and Win 2003. The service is running in a domain account which is a local admin.

If it's a Win32 game and the game doesn't provide the option, then you're most likely out of luck. Under Direct3D at least, dealing with rendering to a window has a number of peculiarities which are different from rendering fullscreen, so some games just don't support it. I suspect OpenGL is similar, but I don't have enough experience with OpenGL to really say if it's possible to have an external application force the game to render to a window.
This is, of course, assuming you're referring to a 3D game...

I'm trying to find a way to delete a user-defined EventLog file.
I create the reg keys (for example) :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\My Log
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\My Log\File
and set ...\File = %SystemRoot%\system32\config\MyLog.evt
The file MyLog.evt is created by the EventLog monitor ... as expected.
Unfortunately it (services.exe i.e. EventLog monitor) maintains open references (4 it seems) to the file handle.
I guess it was a bit of wishfull thinking to hope that the handle would be closed when the reg key ...\My Log was deleted (and yes I make sure there are no sources left using the EventLog before I try to delete it).
My current solution is to queue a MoveFileEx(MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT | MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING) to a hardcoded filename.
Does anyone know of another way to get the ELM to release all references (close the handle) from C++ Win32 so that I don't need a reboot ?
I don't have .NET installed although I noticed it has a class that wraps access to EventLogs i.e. EventLog, and has a Delete method to delete a custom log file.
Does anyone know how the .NET EventLog.Delete works ?

I found this very spooky problem when calling this function on the following file ararngement:
1. inside some test directory create directory "VC6-ch04-Documents and Views_files"
2. inside test directory create file "VC6-ch04-Documents and Views.htm"
3. when trying to delete the file, as a bonus, function also deletes the directory !!!! (grrr, I've lost some important data this way).
I also repeated this problem using delete feature from Total Commander file manager on the same OS plaform.
I didn't test if this bug is "available" on other versions.
Can anyone verify this bug (OS: windows XP Home, SP1, Compiler: VC++ 6.0) ? Also, if this is the bug, where can I report it officialy ?

However, I still consider this an awfull practice.
MSDN coming with Visual C++ 6.0 never mentions theis flag. That means that all older programs will live in ilusion thet they have implemented single file deletion (example might be already mentioned Total Commander).
They might be surprised a lot just like me.
I managed to compile the code only by manually definig this flag (value found by google).
Anyway, enough ranting, thanks.

Rant time, Windows 98 SE again, hated it to start with but now it's getting passionate.
Sent out to a customers site Monday night to look at a computer that couldn't dial-up to the internet. The company I get the work through is also the ISP in question.
I get there and find that basically the only thing wrong is an incorrect userid and password. But then we can't get out to any websites in Internet Explorer 6.
I install IE 6 SP1 thinking that it might rebuild any components that have become corrupt. No good. Outlook could get to mail server and DNS was resolving IP addresses. ping and tracert would reach the ISP DNS server and timeout for everything after that. I was told that was standard behaviour for this ISP (by the owner).
So I install Mozilla and SmartFTP to test if anything could get through. SnartFTP had no problems at all. Mozilla could view FTP but not HTTP while IE couldn't do anything.
They had Norton Internet Security 2002 installed and when I had a look IE, Mozilla and SmartFTP had the same settings. After bashing my head against a wall for 4 hours I gave up. Charged them for my time and suggested a fresh install or new machine was in order. There were other problems like the CD-ROM deciding at times not to read from the CD and lock up the machine. Keyboard amd mouse buffers filling up and other sh*t I can't remember.
Wednesday lunchtime (an hour ago) I get a phone call, someone else came out in 5 minutes made a change to Morton Internet Security and it's all go.
I f***ing hate computers.

Is it possible to make a laptop that is on a domain to the corp. headquarters "see" other machines in a workgroup? I have it hooked up to the same router that the others are, and it is able to use the internet just fine. Anyway I could bridge these two networks?
The laptop is using Cisco VPN to connect to the corp headquarters & all machines are running windows xp.
