So the company I'm working is talking about migrating to Salesforce. I've heard if it before, but I'm not sure exactly what SF provides and offers. Anyone have any experience with it and can tell me just what in the world it is? CRM is such a generic buzzword this day and age, and I tend not to fall for marketing hoopla. Still, I'd like to know what it does.

Gotcha, so far I've heard you can do stuff like write your own web services with it, etc. But, I think it was just a bunch of marketing hoopla. I'll look into it I reckon.

I was asked for advice for a productivity app project about integrating with Salesforce. My impression is based on their website only, I have not worked with it. Personally I would not touch it with a ten-foot-pole.
It looks old, heavy, and rather expensive. I would never apply for a job where they use it. Really.
But TBH, I could be wrong. Maybe for what you do it fits like glove. At least, their site is quite informative. Good luck.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I took a job that is trying to migrate to it, but so far I don't think they fully know what they're migrating to. These guys are pretty open to ideas, but they've been on the SF train long enough I'll need a strong case to sway their minds. Whatever the case, I'll have to look into it.

Salesforce.com is CRM, meaning as a company, you can store your contacts, accounts, addresses, orders, etc, etc. From that you can create and track marketing campaigns by creating mail merges, etc.
However, it is also incredibly powerful because it also allows you to create your own entities and modify the existing ones, all through a web UI, no development needed. They do offer an SDK so that you can develop with it if you wanted to.
Many years ago I created a plugin that would recognize phone numbers and hyperlink them. When clicked, it would dial your phone number (stored in the system) and then dial the number you clicked. This was before browsers were doing it.
It's been a while since I've looked at Salesforce.com but I was very impressed with it.

Salesforce may be great, but my concern is that they're trying to move everything dev-wise over here to this. And to me, that can't be a good thing. I mean, at the end of the day it's just another CRM right? It's not magical. Plug-in or no plug-in, I find a real dev team should be making real software.
Out of curiosity, what languages can you use / write these plug-ins in?

Not exactly. They advertise it as a Platform as a Service. Meaning you can develop any type of web app you want, that fits into their model.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM is similar. We used it years ago to build an app that allowed users to track insurance and payments and many other things. And so much can be done without needing to code.
You can use .Net to code. They also have their own language and plugin for eclipse as I recall.

I may have to look into it. I hope it's not development for babies. Would still like to make sure there's technical fulfillment with the devs here when using it ya know.

Another question... what about frontend work? If I'm making a web app, can I use any technology stack I want on the frontend?

I guess if you have 16 great great grandparents of which 6 are French, 5 are Dutch and 5 are German then you are approximately there.
