This stuff is usually referred to (at least when I've heard of it) as Israeli Mud Coffee. The mud is the tie in with Turkish coffee.
You want the beans ground that fine so that they form a firm cake at the bottom. Improves drinkability, especially to newcomers to the practice.

When i have to have (rarely) coffee and there's nothing else in the area, than a SB, then I just get a simple expresso or a small latte.

It was 5AM and I needed a coffee and he only option in this establishment was Starbucks. It's unconscionable.
But yes: your strategy is sound. My mistake was that instead of grabbing a macchiato I went for a latte and it all went downhill from there. Michael Martin can attest to the dangers of a latte.

Explains your ire a bit: you didn't get coffee - you got a beverage that contained coffee. Putting that much milk into coffee is guaranteed to ruin its taste (even if it went through the digestive track of a civet cat[^]).

Overall I dislike coffee shops so I cant throw sh*t at Starbucks only. For me coffee should be served black, maybe some sugar if its late in the day. The majority of what the coffee shops sell in my area isn't coffee but milk with flavor. Different lattes or frappuccinos or cappuccinos that's so creamy you might as well just put your cup straight to a cow udder.
On top of this its overpriced and all their other gods are also overpriced. My wife loves going to Espresso House but I hate it, mostly because I hate buying overpriced crap.
I cant fanthom how so many people can visit these places so regularly because the thought that going to one of them even once a week is sickening to me.
For the price of one visit with me and my wife with a drink each and some miniscule small cookie that costs an arm and a leg I can buy enough snacks at a normal store or bakery to last several times over. This subject really got me in rant mode.

I go for starbucks now and then, when i get into a bigger town i enjoy a cappuccino toffee and i like it.
But i won't go there regularly, too many hipsters, in this case i prefer good ol coffee or sometimes a fine one from switzerland or italy.

There are no hipsters in Starbuck; only (overly sweetened ) coffee; maybe there were hippies there back in the day it was only a Seattle business.
Hipsters go to 3rd wave coffee houses that serve good coffee from sustainable coffee growers around the world.
(I'm not a hipster, but I go to 3rd wave coffee houses, because the coffee is better and they don't misspell my name).

Hipsters? Interesting. It must be a regional thing.
Here, the place is frequented by (not simultaneously) mother-groups that meet their with their small children, drink coffee, and gossip. Occasional couples on a try-out sort of date (online based rendezvous?), some regulars that live nearby and use it as a hangout (smallish number), but predominantly people studying. Comfort and caffeine - how can you go wrong?

Starbucks doesn't sell coffee.
They sell those Chai Lattes that my wife likes. Or some crazy Mocha Pumpkin Cinnabon Mocchiato Penguin Layabout Fluffed Disillusionment Frappe, with or without whipped cream.

Personally I don't go into into Starbucks, Costa or any other coffee chain. I prefer to frequent local coffee shops where they use higher quality beans and take the time and effort to produce a drink that actually tastes of coffee.
If you enjoy coffee then avoid all coffee chains and especially Starbucks.

I've been there only twice, coffee is a different thing in each country, in USA is big, soft, and like hot water with some residual coffee taste, in European northern countries (i.e. Denmark) coffee is not very tasty as it's done using the same coffee machines, but they are drinking it all day, continuously, in Brazil, Italy and Spain coffee is short, tasty and hot, usually people there take it after eating lunch and on afternoon meetings (i.e. meeting someone in a bar).
Then Starbucks is a different thing: it is like adding plenty of things to coffee to get a softer taste and a big thing, I can take it just to taste something sweet, that reminds more something like a cake or a milkshake than a coffee itself...
I don't think you can call it an affront, it is a chain company that supplies meals, like burger king, McDonalds... you know what is there, in this case Starbucks tries to sell their goods as a premium thing which, from my point of view it is not.
The good thing on these meal chains is that if you have any allergy then you know exactly what to expect: i.e. years ago in Russia a girl that was doing the same travel than me saw a Starbucks and told me: "now I know a place I can eat in case of emergency as it will follow all the regulations as expected". It's the same when travelling with my wife, she has the celiac disease and those chains have specific products that, given it's simplicity and the mechanical way they make things you are safer than in most other places...

I used to take my coffee the same way my mother did - 1 teaspoon of sugar and some milk (we didn't have cream). Drank it that way for close to 30 years.
A couple years back, I dropped the milk and then the sugar... now, it is black.
I will go to Starbucks as a last resort.. I prefer almost anything else (except McDonald's)
I like the dark roast; the caffeine is a bonus, but I like the flavour of a heavy, dark roast.
Coffee is my beverage of choice; I make it the way I like it, just as I would expect others to.

It's delicious. I like the peppermint latte that while it's not on the menu can be had for the asking year round. That said, I find it distasteful to pay that kind of money for coffee. Or wait in lines to get it.

Starbucks' flavored beverages can contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving, points out a new report by an advocacy group called Action on Sugar. While the assessment was done on drinks in the United Kingdom, many of the numbers are pretty similar here in the states.
In nutritional label terms, 25 teaspoons is 125 grams of sugar. To put that in perspective, a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 33 grams of sugar. Put yet another way, 125 grams is about 12 and a half Krispy Kreme donuts.
