In the past, yes. But that's not the way they operate these days. In mobile, for example, they are now being criticised for delivering better products (or in some cases only products) for Android and iOS, rather than Windows Phone/Mobile. The cloud is becoming increasingly big and important to them and they need to interact with all potential consumers regardless of platform. It's economic realities.

Whilst not quite inevitable, this was always on the cards. That said, this is a smart move for both companies. Xamarin get closer integration with the Microsoft ecosystem, and Microsoft take a major step into cross platform development. A win-win outcome.

That’s an easy career improvement goal to give oneself, but “become a kick-ass programmer” is not a simple goal. For one thing, saying, “I want to get better” assumes that you recognize what “better” looks like. "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better"

A good programmer isnt a great software developer. Only writing superior code isnt enough: you need to communicate in a excellent manner want you made and bargain good interfaces, salaries and benefits. And also have a wundeful life "outside the coding universe"
