I used to check in insect repellent with my code in TFS. I had to stop because of that awful code smell.

I test as I go. I'd rather debug 10-50 lines than get 100's of lines in to find I must have been smoking the wacky taccy with code that had no hope of ever working.
When people bring me code they want help debugging, I usually gut the code to something smaller and gives proof of concept instead of dealing with all the bells and whistles they coded before finding if the core code was going to work in the first place.

The problem is that university tenure now depends so much on publishing rather than genuine results or teaching ability that lecturers and professors simply do not have time to reflect on their latest brilliants ideas. It has to be got down on paper and into a journal asap. It's quantity not quality that vice-chancellors and department heads will be totting up at the end of each academic year.

One of our customers, became an university (from collage) not too lately... It was some horrible place even before (they run for the research money to get the 'university' label), but now it is just catastrophic...

Another in our occasional series of new albums that I didn't think I'd enjoy but are getting more than a cursory second listening: Limitless by Tonight Alive
Sample track: To Be Free[^]
This is the second album by an Ozzie band which has got some criticism from the native rock press for the abandonment of punk elements in the first and for being too polished but you can't have everything. Bit of a genre defying outing with all kinds of influences (this track even suggests a bit of Little Big Town style country in places) but with a familiar pop/rock foundation (sometimes bordering on rock cliche but rescued by outstanding vocals).
Anyway, enjoy ... or not. There won't be a test!
