Arguably, this could be the final step.

Once in the VR world, your knowledge and perception of everything is totally controlled - you could even be led to believe you're rebelling against the system . . . by that system. Since those in your age-group (and younger) already willingly plug their ears with controlled input at almost all times and places, already, it not only isn't a large leap. No - it's an eagerly anticipated closure for those who don't want to risk interaction with other real humans*


* at least not without their safety device at hand to end whatever they don't like from invading their reality.
