are you observant and jewish? I'm just curious because while I am not jewish (at least by rearing but i might be by blood) I am fascinated with judaism and very nearly converted.

I do my best to not specify my actual religious beliefs - they I can happily admit to belief in a single deity. As a general rule, however, I prefer prayer of thanksgiving and not 'gimme' - as compared to most of the worlds people I have a lot.
As per that quote - a mitzvah (when looked up) is a command from the bible but, in common usage, it seems to have evolved to mean "a good deed". Taking this latter interpretation, there's a companion quote somewhere on the page:
"If we each did a little more than we had to, none of us would have to do nearly as much."
The possibility for the world to be a much better place is right there in front of us all - just waiting . . . and waiting . . . and waiting . . .
Occasionally, someone does do this sort of thing and it makes the news. How sad that doing the right thing is newsworthy!
Here's an insight on how I can compartmentalize my views:

That's fair enough.
It's just i figured something out about The Torah. And the old testament that's derived from it. It's ancient sociology
For example, Ezekiel 16 in the OT describes the arc the united states is on currently.
It's incredible. I also figured out how they worked it out, and it's very clever, and it works by storytelling.
Anyway, I won't bore you with it, but that's why I asked. I hope I wasn't prying. I didn't intend to pry.
