When I was young, when people got together, they were laughing together, smiling together, singing together, and chatting.
Today, people google together.

I am not very good at googling on a smartphone. So I sit there, waiting for one of the others looking up from his screen, trying to think of something I could say to make contact, something containg nothing google-able whatsoever. Usually I fail; after one or two sentences I slip in some word or statement that needs to verified against information on internet, and the person I was hoping to have a chat with dives back into the ocean of the internet - usually along with a couple others who have noticed that something was spoken, and what to engage in the competition to be the first to correct, supplement or reject what was uttered, based on undisputable "facts" found somewhere on the net.

More and more, I prefer to be alone by myself, rather than with half a dozen googlers. Then I can at least pick up a good book, or listen to some music that hasn't been on the Top 20 list for at least twenty years, without offending the googlers. I can allow myself periods of wondering, or reflection, rather than "fact finding". I can consider alternative approaches, rather than searching for The Answer.

I was once told that in the philosophy of the Far East, the true value of a statement increased the more different ways it could be interpreted. A deep truth has many meanings - the more meanings, the deeper the truth. The googlers go to the very opposite end: There is one unique Correct Understanding, and that is the one that can be identified as Facts, Undisputable Facts. He who can in the shortest time google enough facts to determine The One Correct Understanding, he is the master. The one most valuable person.

Even though it won't put me in the class of valuable persons, I prefer to allow myself searching of alternative understandings, alternate views. Even if I have to do it alone, by myself, I prefer to do that rather than to be with half a dozen googlers pondering what I could say that would not immediately set them off in a new internet fact search.
