Yes, and obvious. But that is a political discussion and I didn't want to go there. I'm not even sure how much of a political discussion you could even have beyond "It's stupid" but I suppose there are those that believe it to be a good law.
But I wonder how much it affects people in their everyday lives or if they just ignore it. I do find it interesting that the mantra used to be "flatten the curve" but then when we did that many places tightened up restrictions instead of loosening them.

One wouldn't require "crazy stupid laws" if people were capable of using their brains. If people used their brains for actual thinking there would be need for very few laws, indeed!
But generally, people don't use their brains.
So they need laws to replace their lack of common sense.
There is one problem, of course, with this. An assumption that lawmakers would use there brains and have common sense. Instead, they have replaced it with political ambition and pandering.
And so, here we are.

You're right, sort of. One of the people calling for more common sense (here on CP) also claims that not wearing a mask is the same as murder.
So, common sense is subjective and doesn't really mean much.

While all of these rules are questionable*, we have enough members of our family in the "at risk" groups, to think that maybe they are not that unreasonable.
*It's impossible to say for certain whether following the science was a good or bad thing. And even with hindsight it will be impossible since we cannot compare it to the alternative.

just so you know, "at risk" groups for covid are the same exact "at risk" groups for most strains of flu. The sames strains of flu that kill these "at risk" people every year.
the media has you thinking covid is special, it really isn't. and now we are finding out that the mortality rate for covid is coming back inline with a bad flu season, just like Johns Hopkins originally said at the beginning of all of this.
I am an insulin dependent diabetic - at high risk. I stand the same chance of dying from the flu as I do with covid 19.
I don't shrug it off, I just don't think crazy and stupid laws are the answer.

Rather than reading fake news I listen to what the scientists say; and they are still not agreed on what we should do. So until they are I think the government is taking a reasonably sensible course.

I see you took this personal and thought it was a bash on the UK. If I wanted to bash on the UK there is plenty of material to do so and wouldn't need to sneak it in here. That was not my intent. As mentioned in the OP, I'm curious how it affects their daily lives, which after all, is the purpose of the Lounge as stated at the top.

Also, I don't think 'the Left' are any more corrupt than 'the Right' who are actually quite similar to 'the Left'.
Of course I'm not talking about actual rights who may be more like actual lefts than you think.
On that account, I have a problem with the terms 'left' and 'right', they push people in a corner and add to further polarization.
I would probably be considered left on all accounts in America (like most Europeans), but in the Netherlands I'm more to the right.
Gun ownership isn't even a thing in the Netherlands, but in America I think it's mostly reserved for the right.
So what if you promote gun ownership and a wall with Mexico, but you also want a social economic system where the rich pay more taxes and everyone is insured?
We have Wilders, pretty much a racist politician who is considered 'extreme right', but he's actually pretty left when it comes to economic issues (I think he's a better fit with our leftist parties than our right, although they think otherwise).
I also think this lack of nuance plays a big part in the ongoing radicalization.
It's either you love afro-Americans (is that the correct term nowadays?) and want their babies or you're a racist.
Maybe you should actually be discussing why afro-Americans still struggle like they do.
I mean, you can't just deny they have a much higher chance of ending up in crime and going to jail, and police violence is just a small part of that problem.
Unfortunately, when mentioning such a statistic you're labeled a racist and so radicalization continues.
I'm not sure where this lack of nuance comes from though, is it the media, social inequality, lack of education, all of the above?
I do know it's not necessarily an American problem, although it takes pretty extreme forms there.
We have the same problems with Turks and Moroccans (and to a lesser extent Eastern Europeans who come to "steal our jobs").
Trump is clearly on 'the Right' camp, with very unnuanced statements that only add to polarization and radicalization, which is probably a large part of the cause of the problems you're currently having.
Instead of building a wall, and so implicitly labeling Mexicans as unwanted "aliens", he could've started a constructive discussion.
Instead of Tweeting "if the looting starts the shooting starts", he could've Tweeted something about, well, basically anything that wouldn't make a bad situation worse, but maybe something about solidarity and condemn racism.
I know, I know, "these looters had it coming, they're dumb and criminal and they deserve to be shot", but the fact is shooting them will only incite more violence and won't solve anything in the end.
Ironically, getting rid of his opponents is exactly how China would've done it.
So yeah, I tried to keep this as nuanced as possible to not offend anyone 
To sum up, I think your "Left" should simply be replaced with "people" and it's pretty accurate.

Most people, left and right.
But yes, I get your point about the extremes. However, in the US in particular, since the majority of our media is very, very far left most people that are even a little left end up with extreme left views because they only listen to the media, they don't actually look at the facts.
First one I remember in relation to Trump is when he said Mexico is sending their worst here and then the media reported that Trump thinks all Mexicans are rapists and criminals. First off, he didn't even come close to saying that. Secondly, a normal human being would think, "really? He thinks all Mexicans are rapists? That can't be right." But no, most left people just believed the reports/lies from the news.
So, I do get your point and for the most part agree, but the reality seems to be that "left" people have lost their mind.

It's probably not like the extreme left are crazier than the extreme right, just that they are more mainstream and so are more visible.
On a side note, Trump saying that Mexicans are sending their worst is also polarizing and damaging.
It certainly sends out a message to all American Mexicans, good and bad, and the people around them.
It's one thing if you or I make such a statement, it's something else when one of the most powerful people on the planet does it.
And as you say, there are plenty of dumb people who believe him and follow him.
I know you're a Trump supporter, but I can't believe you would think of American Mexicans as "their worst" (yes, I hold you in that high esteem ), even though there seem to be some problems.

Yes, he certainly does not act Presidential when speaking. I'm not sure there are many from either side that would disagree with that.
However, it speaks to how screwed up our politics have been for a long time. One of the reasons Trump got elected IS because he speaks like that, he doesn't sanitize his language to spare feelings. And a lot of us loved to see a politician not hide from the facts to spare feelings.
