Back then, PLCs didn't have descriptive tags and labels for registers.
My first one was Siemens S5, in the fist versions it was like you tell, but when I started we could at least use 8 bytes naming without symbols or spaces.

The new TIA Portal is way bigger and you can do a lot, but it is done a bit too much idiot-proof. You can't do many of the things I was used too and the intellisense is way too intrusive.

In my opinion the best siemens PLC were the late Step 7. I have had a lot of fun with them (and a lot of Mad | Mad | Dead | X| Dead | X| Mad | Mad | Blush | :O Blush | :O D'Oh! | D'Oh! | too) and they have teached me a way of doing things that is not that usual in "pure" high level language programmers.

If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you
Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.
