I honestly thought they already had this type of technology (more or less) for improving the resolution of Earth based telescopes.

They do, but IIRC it only works to correct left-right, up-down errors. I does not do anything for errors in the line-of-sight, which are less important for astronomy. The new technique corrects for line-of-sight errors (mostly delays in transmission due to the atmosphere), which are important for physics experiments.

Given all the logistics involved, it's unlikely that humanity will ever see our way outside the Solar System to colonise exoplanets. But the possibility of settling elsewhere inside the Solar System isn't so far-fetched. It's all fun-and-games until the Belters drop some rocks on your head
