I don't know about you, but my experience is that many people use a binary search when inserting printfs or breakpoints to pinpoint where the code goes wrong.

Exactly! There is no way to calculate the costs incurred for an indefinite period of time. If it was attempted, the price of the product would be well outside the range of most, if not all, customers.

Indefinite duration updates aren't reasonable unless paid; but makers of consumer devices should be required to provide security updates and any required server support running for the reasonable lifespan of the hardware (probably 5 or 10 years for most consumer devices). Although the article didn't touch on them, high dollar value long life commercial/industrial/medical need to be supported for however many decades they're typically used in the real world. For the latter I'm fine with paid support only, with the caveat that for anything medical/safety related that's connected to the internet there're regulatory requirements that it be kept patched.

Perhaps more possible, although the bean counters will never agree: have companies release their source code to all drivers, etc, when they stop support for a device. Let it enter the open source realm and have others update it if it is really worthwhile.

Interesting point of view. I'm of the thinking that if the employer spend more time appreciating their employees, treat them as human-beings and not cogs in a machine, and build a trust relationship with them, maybe... just maybe that there wouldn't be so many employees leaving the company.

Although I totally agree with you, I think it is not an excuse to do that.
1) It is not really ethical
2) You might have legal problems
3) You are risking your professional future
4) Depending on what, you might be harming not implicated users
5) ...
Still... some companies / moron managers deserve that or even more.

I don't believe DonathanH meant the stealing of data (which is definitely unethical and usually illegal, or at least violates your employment contract), but the mass resignations.
I believe that proper treatment of your subordinates usually pays off in the end. Even if they do decide to leave, they are more likely to do an organised transfer of their responsibilities before their last day.
