It's more for the convenience than laziness.
For example, I have 6 monitors on my desk each with a power switch on the bottom edge of the screen; the power strip is down the back of the desk an inconvenient to get to. But I can just turn them all on by saying "ALexa, turn the monitors on."
Another example, we have several lamps round the living room to give ambient lighting. A couple have switches up under the shades; two have in-line switches that trail down onto the floor at the sides of the sofa. The power points for all are behind chairs etc. But again, I can turn them all off with a single verbal command.
I recall that many US houses have their lighting sockets connected to a wall switch, but UK houses aren't wired that way and I don't fancy leaning over both ends of the sofa to switch lights off every night!

I've been out of internet (and thus tv) for almost a week now because som id10t ran over the post and pulled down the cable.

I agree with the dependency issues. My family's and my life would be very different without internet, to say nothing of the withdrawal symptoms my teenage daughter would undergo. 
Our internet provider is very reliable, but given the level of potential histrionics, I have both a spare modem and a cell data plan (cell data plans are quite cheap in Israel). I hope that both go unused.

I used to have that problem regularly, Mike. My provider always told me it was my modem. After 4 modems and about $300 in service calls, I got a different provider - no more troubles.

Yeah, they're telling us it's a router problem. You know Roger it's their money. They just put in fiber in the area and I'm thinking there may be a problem with it? They're so screwed up but it's the only deal in town. It's either them or nothin!

Greetings,
Our internet original provider got expensive (20 years). We decided to try T-Mobile Internet.
It runs off of the cell phone towers. I did check the distance to the nearest tower
and it was approx 3/4's of a mile away. (just over 1 kilometer)
At present, we're getting around 245 - 400 mps. Speed depends on the time of day.
Ping does suck though running around 18-25 so intense gaming isn't really possible.
And yes, the old internet provider has been sending us letters and other mailings to try and get us back.
Cost is less than half of what were were paying before. Works for me!

Had a similar problem when we switched from DSL internet to Cable internet. I just setup my
phone as a hot spot to get emails and such early in the day and let the wifey watch her
TV shows (YoutubeTV) in the evening. It was only a few days so our data plan was able to
handle it. I had more than enough games to play that don't require an internet connection.

Don't talk to me about Bell and fibre. They destroyed much of my brand-new front lawn installing the fibre trunk, then trenched through my lawn with the supply cable, ignoring the previously-agreed routing to the service entrance for my house. The final "burying" of the cable amounted to about two inches into a slit cut with a spade, so the next time my wife decides to put in a flowerbed will likely spell the end of the cable.
And the installer couldn't accept that I didn't want fibre hooked up because I told him the service wouldn't give me what I needed. "But it's the fastest speed you can get." Yes, but speed isn't everything. I need fixed IP addresses, and I need to hang servers on the connection (I run the company server farm in my basement).

I feel your pain. Of course you want a vertical taskbar, screen height is the most valuable asset of a computer.
Only idiots remove features and call it an upgrade.
Fortunately there is a third-party solution[^] that I'm happy about. For as long as it continues to work that is.
