The bottom line is that it is not easy. You'll need a some type of server service running on the machine you want to monitor. Then you'll need a client on the machine doing the monitoring.
The previous guy is right with VNC. It's just about the best open source remote control software I've found. Comes with source code too.

I am writing an app that will reside on a W2k server. The app will be started from a shortcut on the users desktop. The app will allows users to construct a operating system level command with parameters and excute the command on the server. The command returns monitoring info (for those of you familiar with GIS and ArcSDE, it's the sdemon command, which is usually executed from the command line). I can do that part now by using the Shell function. The info returned is briefly displayed in a dos-like window which automatically closes when all info is displayed.
I want to redirect the returned info (text) to the Windows Notepad app where the user can edit, save, etc. I have also tried using the functionality provided by System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo but have so far been unsuccessful.
Any ideas would be very helpful and much appreciated.

This is the only example I know of. I can't find another example of this idea anywhere.
To convert blocks of code from C# to VB, you might want to try http://www.kamalpatel.net/ConvertCSharp2VB.aspx[^]
It will NOT convert an entire program like this example. But you can use it to convert blocks of code so you can then use that for a reference to hand convert the rest if needed.

Hi All,
I am trying to get SMTP email address using MAPI functions in VB.
So far, I am not successful in getting that.
Here is what I am doing:
1. Use MAPILogon to get MAPI session handle,
2. Use BMAPIAddress to show address selection dialog box with session
handle got in step 1 above.
3. Select 3/4 addresses in that dialog box and click "To:" to copy the names
to "To:" edit control and click OK.
4. Use ResolveName to get properties of recipients selected in step 3.
5. I should have smtp email address in Address attribute of recipient.
I am getting address internal to Outlook, but not smtp(xxx@yyy.com) in step 5.
Can anyone please tell me, how I can get smtp address using above approach
if possible? If not, are there any other techniques to get SMTP address using
MAPI functions?

I have created a VB application which sole purpose is to create a simple text document. The application queries a SQL server 2000 database and returns a recordset containing 101 fields and typically less then 50 rows of data. I have run into a problem where randomly the application will hang while looping through the data. The problem has no correlation with regards to the number of records being returned. At this point my only thought is that there is a limitation with the ADO 2.7 component I am using. What I can’t explain is why this error does not occur every time. If you have had or heard of a problem similar to this I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving it.

Such algorithms are usually patented by their creators and won't be available as public source code. You might want to try the SourceForge but I doubt you'll find anything. The most I think you'll find is SDK's for various fingerprint scanning devices.
You might want to try www.neurotechnologija.com/verifinger.html. They have an SDK available but the site says "source code may be also made available for developers, who wish to gain all information about fingerprint recognition algorithm."

how to save a flash in a webpage as a jpg/gif/bmp file?
i used a flash object that i downloaded from the site of http://bukoo.sourceforge.net to create a flash movie file, and now i want to add a function and it can allow people to save this flash movie as a jpg/gif/bmp file.Can anyone here provide some codes or component to help me realize this function?

First, you can't save a movie as a JPG or BMP. Neither format support multiple frames of images. Animated GIF's can probably be used, but you'll have to write your own function to export each frame of the animation into an animated GIF file. As for how to do that, I have no idea.

We are using an ASPX file to create a webform. We are creating an interface to generate a table. This interface has a timescale with a drop down list of annually, quarterly, and monthly. It also has a time period listbox where one to many years can be selected from 1995 to 2003. There is also a choice of indicator that the figures are based on say for instance hospital admissions of respiratory disease. These indicators are drawn from a database. As well as this there is a listbox of geographical divisions for each type of organisation. These organisations are District Health boards, Regional Councils, and Territorial local Authorities. Only one type of organisation can be picked but out of each type one to many say regional councils can be selected. These lists are connected to a database . Then there is a button titled output the data which is to show the data such as what the indicator is, the years, the timescales, and regional organisations and the related figures. All figures to create the output are from a database. They are drawn from the an Microsoft Access database. Is there a way to do this through ASPX? If not what VB.net code would we have to write? We have a deadline coming soon. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Are you asking how to write that? If so, you're going to miss your deadline.
Or are you asking how to connect to an Access database from an ASPX page?
That's easy enough. Just search the Help in Visual Studio for "Creating Connections to Access Databases" and you'll find what you're looking for.

I am building a toolbar in VB.NET from scratch that mimics Microsoft’s toolbar that comes with VS.NET. I need to know the best way to handle popup menus on a drop down style button. I can show the popup menu below the button ok but what I really need to do is detect when the user clicks on the popup menu so I can reset the state of the button and redraw it. I thought about walking the popup menu's menu items hooking into the click event but writing a recursive method to do that seems kind of messy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I defined a string:
dim str as string
and I assigned it a long string with more than 300 bytes:
str="kfa;sdlkjfakdjflakjsdfkd...
when the program runs, I found that str contains only 253 bytes and no more, as if the string is truncated. And I try to use str=str + "asldkk" to increase the length of this string graduately, but it still cannot be longer than 253 bytes. But MSDN tells me that strings can be much longer than that. So how could this happen?
