I have created a Dialog based application using appwizard. now, i want to access a user defined function in the application class from my dialog class. how can i do that?

the application class object is taken global named theApp which you can see in your global list
simple extern that variable in the file where u want to use that variable
then call the user defined functions using the theApp object

Like the MFC Reference states, your application class is derived from CWinApp. There is a global MFC function AfxGetApp which returns a pointer to your class's parent CWinApp.
You can use the below method to access the class. Here, we assume that your the implementation of your dialog class (.cpp file) #includes the application class's header file. This is usually done for you when you create an application, but make sure just in case. If you have not included it, you will receive errors like 'Unknown variable'

The DYNAMIC_DOWNCAST macro does a safe downcast from CWinApp* returned by AfxGetApp into the CMyApp* type. As your application class is derived from CWinApp, the cast is perfectly legal and will yeild a pointer to your derived class.
You can use a similar method with any MFC class, for example, you can use GetParentFrame method of getting a view's parent frame (CFrameWnd*) then cast it down to your derived CMyFrameWindow class.

Hello Friends,
I am Having a tree ctrl in a dialog box now when i set the checkbox property of the tree ctrl then there is a very Long Horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the TreeCtrl. This scroll bar is very long even if the length of the string inserted in the treectrl is small
Can anyone help me out in removing the horizontal scroll, but i want the Vertical Scroll...

Is your dialog based on a prepared resource ?
If it is, then override the OnCreate method of your dialog class, and first call the base class to create the dialog and control windows. Use Class Wizard to bind a control member for the tree control. When the base class call returns, use the member variable to check if the control window is created (m_hWnd member of variable is not null)
Set the window style flags using the member variable and ModifyStyle method to remove the WS_HSCROLL flag. This will remove the horizontal scrollbar.
If you create the list control dynamically, you can leave the WS_HSCROLL flag out from the Create method call. This will remove the horizontal bar. Including the WS_VSCROLL flag will ensure that the vertical scroll bar remains.

well but what if I really have something in my tree control which needs to have a horizontal scrollbar

I believe the only option for the tree control here is that the horizontal scrollbar is either on or off.
If you need a special implementation (variable on/off scrollbar), then derive from CTreeCtrl and draw the horizontal scrollbar yourself when necessary.

I want to use CxImage in my project, but i am not able to link the project files, i added CxImage workspace in my workspace and i get this following errors
error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: virtual long __thiscall CxMemFile::GetC(void)" (?GetC@CxMemFile@@UAEJXZ)
13 other simlilar erros
i think i am providing the rite path, for the lib file but still i am not ale to resolve it
please help.

Thanx for the detailed info very much...
What my problem was that i didnt want to mess with my workspace i.e include those workspace in mine so that i can use them, instead what i did was i compiled the demo , it compiled all the needed libs, so i put those libs in my workspace and included the "include" files from CxImage. Works like a charm...

My application wants to make a query of if there is a 'name' in the data file which is owned by another system and also a binary file(DSS format, any idea of what it is?) The query string is a ascii string, so my idea is change it to ascii value and reads the binary data file in and looks for the value. Is it make sense, or could you guys give me a new idea? Thanks in advance.

I can't speak for everyone else, but the question didnt entirely make sense. Are you saying you want to find a string within a binary file? If you know nothing of the file format then your only option is to do a brute force search of the entire file!

A brief introduction of database programming with ODBC:
The database programming model in MFC, for example, consists of clearly seperated elements. Firstly, you have a database object. This object represents the connection to a database. The database itself can be of any type (MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL), as databse objects are bound to the databases through either the database driver or a data source definition.
Data source definitions are entries in ODBC Manager. They specify the database driver used, login name, password, target database and any necessary flags or settings. You can use the driver directly through a database object as well.
Next step up, we have a recordset object. A recordset object represents a query to a database: a collection of one or more SQL statements and a set of internal variables to hold the response from these statements. When you construct a recordset object, you can specify a database object reference for it. This means that any statements you execute and the results of those statements are handled in the context of this very database.
For the recordset objects, they contain a FieldExchange object, which is responsible for doing the field exchange between the results received from the recordset and the internal variables you have specified. Overriding the member function 'DoFieldExchange' allows you to specify how the returning results are stored.
More information is available in the MSDN Reference for classes CDatabase and CRecordset. Also, there is a good quantity of different articles available here at CodeProject. This[^] is a good place to start: look articles which have a 'Beginner' level specification next to them. These articles will help you get started. The rest is experiencing and testing.
The most easiest way in Visual Studio .NET 2003 is to add a MFC ODBC Database consumer class to your project. The wizard will help you through then.

Hello guys,
My machine has XP OS, .net platform and VC7 installed. If i create an application that uses GDI+, then will that application work on win2000 where there is no .net platform installed.
What all things do i need to do for that application to work on win2000.
Can any one answer me who has pratically confirmed it. As i have only one machine and no more room for win2k on my harddisk, i am not able to test it.

I am wondering how I could read in a file without neccessarily storing it, in order to just find the length of the file so that I can create an array the specific length of the file. Thanks

What do you mean without storing it?
1. There is a structure stat and a function _stat (header types.h, refer MSDN)
2. You can use the FindFirstFile function to get the file info structure which contains the file attributes (MSDN again)
These two ways get you the file size without having to open in explicitly.
