Stripping tags is easy - it's the formatted text output that is the trick. For instance,
<h1>Heading</h1>This is a paragraph
Should come out:
Heading
This is a paragraph
but by stripping tags we'd get
Heading This is a paragraph

Hmm... The DOM does that for us, why create a needless server side program or use Perl?

I have tested this and it works. just don't F5 in the new window and you are safe. Then file/saveas and save as a text file. Done, no server hit and it's painless to do in the client.

Each article posted on this site has a comments section that follows. It would be nice if there is a way to view the article and ALL comments at once. At present, one has to click on each comment to expand it. A simple expand-all button preceding the comment block would be nice.
Keep up the good work with this site. It is a wonderful job that you guys are doing.

Ok my 2 cents
1.
I enjoy Discussion Boards but
I hate Mouse clicks or Tabbing to go from one thread to another,
So the development of a less interactive GUI for discussion boards that gets me the info I desire is my request.
How about when I visit a board the ability to checkmark all the threads I wish to read, and then post the info to the server to reply with all the threads I requested opened !
2.
I like answering questions on certain topics, (sure a lot of topics I don't even understand the question).
How about incorporating an e-mail alert when a new thread is started on a topic that I have added to my keywords in my profiles preferences.
I realise these are large requests, But I would like to see codeproject.com with the best developer discussion boards in existence. Actually I haven't seen either of these feature anywhere,
Anyhow I'ts a great site already

Thanks for the ideas. We are constantly working on the boards and are looking for ways to make them easier to use, and to provide you with the info you need in a more efficient manner.
I'll talk to Uwe and see what we can come up with!

When we first made the ability to store user-profiles, there are myriads of possibilities what to do with these profiles, surely on is to add e-mail alerts for notifications.

We could have an MFC forum, but then we'd need an ATL forum, an STL forum, a COM forum etc. I think it's easier simply to have a single forum that deals with all VC++ issues in one place so people don't have to continually jump around looking for information.
Maybe if one particular topic becomes more active than others then we'll branch out.

On the message boards, it always says how many new messages there are, but there isn't an easy way to just view the new messages... would it be possible to add this functionality?

I appreciate the work you're doing, but clicking on articles to skim them is a very jumpy experience the way the screen reorganizes. Why not display the first few lines (may be 350 bytes) of all messages? That would make reading through a discussion much better, and I bet reduce traffic. When posting an article the user can keep this in mind if there is not much to say then it will fit and no round-trip would be necessary.

Yes, I don't like the "jumpy experience" either. In fact, it's plain painful. The idea of loading the initial nn bytes is good, but perhaps they could be displayed "tooltip"-style, when the user points at the link (use a DHTML layer or something with some script).
Or, perhaps when a link is expanded, its entire subtree contents could be downloaded to the client. Expansions of further subtree elements is then handed on the client. For most discussion trees we're not talking about huge numbers of bytes so this seems workable. Heck, encode the discussion tree in XML and simply make an XSL style sheet to generate the client HTML... (ok, well, I guess not _everyone_ uses IE5 so its not _that_ simple).

Hi there.
I have noticed a little thing that is a bit annoying sometimes. The title of each page here at CodeProject seems to always be "The Code Project: Free Source ...<subject>"
The problem with that is that the subject of the page, which does show up on the top of the page never shows up in the back menu (when you right-click on back, or click the drop-down arrow beside the button).
Maybe they titles could be:i.e. "Property Sheets @ The Code Project: Free Source ..."
Just a little thing - I use the right-click on the back/forward button a lot, that's all

I would like to suggest to keep track of User Profiles. Users can log on, and settings like how many message per window they prefer to see get activated.
Besides I find a gallery with the users nice. I've often found myself in the situation that I'd like to know more about the person which has written this excellent article.
To make things perfect, the User Settings should be "roaming" (I often switch computers).
